“Without socialization we would not know how to think, act or be ‘humans’.” Discuss to the extent to which you agree with this statement. (600 – 800 words). Sociology is a discipline which deals with the scientific study of human and social behaviour and activities, and of the results of these social activities. Sociology is concerned with how human beings think and act as social creatures, that is, humans. The basic assumption of sociology is that human existence is social existence, meaning that people are linked to one another and dependent upon each other for their very existence. In fact, our sense of individual identity, that is, our sense of who and what we are, depends on how we interact with other people. One of the primary ideas within sociology is that people are not born knowing how to behave. The claim made by sociologists is that this is something that has to be taught and learnt. The idea that we are born into a society that gas a certain existing behaviour patterns and culture and we, as human beings, learn these rules through an ongoing process called socialization. Socialization is the process by which individuals - a new generation - learns about the culture of their society. They learn about behaviours that are acceptable and those that are not. (Mustapha, 2009) The importance of social experience is evident in the lack of human development characteristic of socially isolated children. Specifically, if early childhood is devoid of social experience, the child may fail to develop normal language skills leading to limitations in other social learning. Simply, if a child is locked away by her parents and derived of social contact can never fully recover from the effects of the lack of early social experiences, even after receiving intensive training.
