Nature in a general sense is the inherent features, qualities or character of something or somebody which is usual or expected. Abiding by this explanation of nature, it can be inferred that nature is not a physical entity which is invented by some life forms at a later stage of their existence. Even, the Cambridge English dictionary defines nature as ‘the force that is responsible of physical life’. Thus, nature could be collectively the entire physical world including the biotic and abiotic components of the biosphere, the landscapes, and other features and products of earth that are beyond the creativity of humans and other life forms. A similar concept is argued by Robbins in his article where he is quoted as, ‘The central focus of planners during this period has been the heavily subsidized effort to expand and intensify agricultural activities while simultaneously meeting conservation and preservation demands by creating and enclosing forest space’ (Robbins, 2001, p. 642). This might raise questions on the social perceptions of nature but if deeply thought about, the human intervention was with the ecology and not with the nature. There is a very fine line that dissects the two. The extension of forests land use is an attempt to restore the ecosystem which a part of nature and not the nature as a whole. Robbins in the conclusion of his article cites Bruno Latour as, ‘nature causes the society and society causes the nature’ (Robbins, 2001, p. 654). But it is an undisputed fact that nature can neither be created nor be destroyed. To clarify this further, it should be understood that when the forests are cleared, it not the nature that has been cleared. Even after the clearing of forests, there is something that remains in the form of land and soil which is again a part of nature.
