Devon Williams September, 2013 2013FA-HIST-1301-81008 Was John Brown A Hero or A Murderer? John Brown was a radical American abolitionist who believed in the violent overthrow of the slavery system and orchestrated the infamous (and unsuccessful) 1859 raid on Harper’s Ferry federal arsenal which resulted in his capture and sentencing to death by hanging that same year. Historians agree that Brown’s actions greatly contributed to the start of the civil war and his raid further revealed the division between the North and South. He is often recognized as “America’s first domestic Terrorist”. Brown was born in 1800 in Torrington, Connecticut to an extremely religious and abolitionist family where he first began forming his anti-slavery views.
It is clear from the first sentences that D. Books has a strong opinion about social distinction. He claims that, “Maybe it’s time to admit the obvious. We don’t really care about diversity all that much in America, even though we talk about it a great deal” (331). He wants us to acknowledge that we like the world to think of us as a diverse population but in reality we are divided in groups. If we take a wide view of the country it might look as a very diverse nation, but once we look in closer and start dividing areas geographically we would discover that we are a homogeneous nation.
The two men have very similar views on the subject of just laws and unjust laws, but each goes about dealing with the problem of injustice differently. "On The Duty of Civil Disobedience" is a writing by Thoreau where he expresses his belief that the less the government does to govern, the better it is. He preferred less involvement from the government, referring to the government as a machine. He felt it was only necessary because the American people needed to feel its presence and hear its din. He believed that his first obligation was not to the government, but to do what he felt was right.
Totalitarianism from Total Domination In the essay “Total Domination,” written by Hannah Arendt; she discusses Nazism in the form totalitarianism as “True Terror”. If not for the survivors of the cruel brutality of totalitarian states, it would almost be impossible to believe it ever happened. What is Totalitarianism? Totalitarianism is a form of government in our political system, which gives absolute power to one ruler (dictator) who cannot be restricted by any type of constitution or law. The rise of totalitarianism governments started before WWII, but after the Great Depression when fascism became an ideology of society.
Ayatollah Khomeini one of the 20th century's most ruthless leaders. As a 70-year-old grandfather, Khomeini pulled off one of the most daring revolutions in history and served a crushing blow to America. Osama bin Laden was the cause for 911 and many other Terrorist attacks. When the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979, Osama joined the Afghan resistance, believing it was his duty as a Muslim to fight the occupation. Last but not least he was shot in the leg, sentenced to death, escaped twice from prison, led a successful one-day revolution, and became the leader of his country mostly while still in college.
George Orwell (1903-1950), was an English novelist, essayist, journalists, and critic. His writing focuses around totalitarianism, government over controlling.Nineteen Eighty-Four is a dystopian novel about a totalitarian government that oppresses its people and controls all aspects of their lives. The intended audience is a past WWII population who feared total government control. Orwell believes that the government should not have all control over the people and in 1984 they are always being watched and cannot do anything in privacy. Many writers have pointed out similarities between the modern world and the world of 1984 such as in the articles.
The Holocaust! Have you heard about it? It was a period of time from January 30, 1933 to May 8, 1945, when Adolf Hitler, who was the Chancellor of Germany, reigned over most of Europe with his political party, called the Nazi Party. The three main causes of the Holocaust were because Adolf Hitler mainly wanted to annihilate the Jewish population in Europe, and then the entire world of Jewish people, because Germany had lost the war in World War I, and because of greed, because the National Socialist German Workers’ Party, or Nazis, burgled the possessions of others and profited from the forced labor of the victims, as a revenge for losing the war in World War I. Now to explain the first reason of the cause of the Holocaust!
President Lincoln’s formula: “government of the people, by the people, and for the people.” Read Mussolini’s Diuturna, pages 374-77. America is buying into the philosophy that led to Auschwitz in Germany. It is the first society in history whose mind molders are moral relativists. This society will either disprove one of the most universally established laws of history, or repent of its relativism and survive, or persist in its relativism and perish. This is the modern West in a nutshell: democratic, pluralistic, secular, scientific, technological, industrial, post-Enlightenment civilization.
S. Gold mentioned that in his article and attributed it to David Stoll. However, this is a conclusion reached based on the issues raised by the part of the American population that sees only the detrimental side of immigration. That attitude is one of fear and paranoia. There has always been a part of society that is very concerned about the purity of the White race. Many of the reasons that the original colonies chose to break from the British and the reason other Europeans came to this country was to live freely, worship freely and create a less repressive society.
