My Career Goals

I am a student that has had several different career goals but none of them seemed too exciting, but then after my first year of college I worked at the Wisconsin Lions Camp in Rosholt, WI and my perspective on what I wanted to do with my life changed to where it has stayed until today. The camp serves youth with disabilities including youth who are deaf and hard of hearing, blind and visually impaired, as well as youth with intellectual disabilities, type 1 diabetes, and epilepsy. While the whole camp was an amazing experience that I loved, it was the deaf and hard of hearing weeks that were my personal favourite. Through the camp I learned conversational ASL, a great deal about the Deaf community, and got to know quite a few deaf and hard of hearing individuals personally. For example, I have also worked in customer service for many years in order to pay for school, and that has taught me to be able to work both independently on a job or task while still working towards a group goal; in addition to being able to work with a team to tackle a tough project in the most efficient way. In most social situations I would classify myself as a leader, but at the same time I am very capable of stepping back and letting someone else take over who might have a different perspective or more skill in an area because I know the tremendous value of being able to work as a team, whether it is more immediate or part of the bigger picture. Another experience is the year I spent as a resident assistant in the resident halls on campus. The resident assistant job developed many skills that can be utilized in the workforce and helpful in a graduate school setting.
