Assignment Three: Mise-en-scene Design Scene: Sam and Suzy at the Lake COSTUME: Suzy: In this scene, Suzy’s costume is a lot different compared to the way she is dressed throughout the rest of the movie. Her hair is down and frizzy, somewhat representing her free spirit and attitude in this scene. Opposed to her usual hairstyle, she looks more her age, and it really represents who she is. Her clothing in this scene is extremely different in this scene as well. Suzy is usually seen in a nice, modest dress, wearing clean white socks and closed toe shoes. Here, Suzy is exposed, wearing only a bra and underwear. She isn’t even wearing shoes. The white training bra and cotton high waster underwear reflect her youthfulness and purity, but also show how complex her character is and how mature she is for her age. Usually constricted in the clothes she wears, in this scene, Suzy is completely free and down to simple basics, just like her relationship with Sam. Sam: Sam, just like Suzy, is wearing barely any clothing in this scene. He is in his underwear and the shirt he wears for his Boy Scout troop. His shirt is unbuttoned, revealing his bare chest. This is a completely different look; usually Sam looks very polished and put together. It is important to note though, that Sam, although he is letting lose, is still wearing his thick, black glasses. His glasses represent his intelligence and maturity. Sam’s hair is also a bit disheveled. It is not parted and combed perfectly like it is in the beginning of the film. His hair reflects his youth and free spirit, which is interesting because two sides of Sam are shown through what he is wearing. Also, instead of wearing shoes, Sam is barefoot and comfortable which is shown throughout this scene.
