Mid-Term Break Essay Mid-Term Break is a short poem written by Seamus Heaney. The poem is about a boy that is taken out of school during the term due to a death in his family. As the poem progresses you discover that the death in the family is actually the boy’s younger brother, who died in car accident. When the boy arrives at his house he is met by friends and family who all take the death in their different ways. For example he explains that his father usually takes funerals on the chin but can’t hold back his feelings this time round. When the boy goes into the house he is embarrassed by the older men standing to shake his hand and tell him they were “sorry for his trouble”. “Whispers informed strangers I was the eldest.” This quote gives the impression that the boy is not home a lot, and is not know by some family friends. As you discover in the story the boy’s mother is upset by the loss of her child, but doesn’t take it as hard as the boy’s father. “Away at school, as my mother held my hand in hers and coughed angry tearless sighs.” In the poem it says that the ambulance arrived at ten o’clock with the corpse, stanched in bandages by the nurses. This suggests that the family maybe of catholic beliefs by bringing the corpse home to rest until the funeral. At the end of the poem the boy goes into his little brother’s room. He describes snowdrops and candles soothing the bedside where the young boy lay. He tells you that this is the first time he has saw his little brother in six weeks. This suggests that the boy has been away from home for some time, and that the last time he saw his brother he was alive. In this stanza you learn the boys own reaction to the death of his brother. In the seventh stanza it describes the way the boy died giving you an idea that he was not ran over by the car but hit by the bumper which left no mark but a poppy bruise on
