The person that has influenced my career choice to study computers is my mother. My mother’s name is Jacqueline McGee. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University of Southern Mississippi. She has served on active duty in the United States Air Force and as a reservist in the Mississippi Air National Guard for over twenty years. While in the Air National Guard, my mother worked as a Network Information Systems Specialist at the Communication Squadron in Gulfport, Mississippi. There she learned how to set up network communication in house and in the field. She would talk about how they had to set up a communication network from the ground up. She gained hands on experience with both the computer’s hardware and software. This was exciting to me because every year she would take me to their open house which allowed me to see firsthand what she did. Those open houses planted the seed for my future career choice because I often thought that this would be a cool job to have. During and after my mother’s military career as a reservist, she also maintained a civilian job as the Office Manager and IT Technician for the 15th District Attorney’s Office for over eighteen years. She frequently would bring home a project from work that was associated with computers. We once worked on a Microsoft Access database that tracked all the criminal cases within the district. She created the case management system and she let me help. It was intriguing to see how certain symbols and codes could produce macro calculations and database searches. This was my first experience with Microsoft Visual Basic as a programming language and I was hooked. I wanted to know everything about computer software languages which further lead me to an even more interesting field, computer hardware.
