Contemporary Art in Canada is the beating pulse of the people being created through our lifetime, representing the social, political framework and cultural influences in today's world. It allows artists to use an array of medium to conceive their vision and allow their work to speak through their diverse origins and traditions, and give a voice to those who cannot find the courage to speak for themselves. Memento by Ed Pien is a contemporary art piece expressed through an installation where viewers are welcomed into a grand-scale sanctuary where imagination, myth and spirits come to life. Approaching the end of a corridor where Memento sits, one hears the eerie sounds of ocean and murmur and it’s hard to distinguish between soothing sound that water usually carries and the combination of unclear voices that haunt the soul. As you turn the corner, your attention moves through the tangled and knotted rope work, swaying from one wall to another and from ceiling to concrete ground. If one hadn’t developed an appreciation for contemporary art, experiencing his work will have completely changed your view. Quoting Ed Pien, “Some may find my work scary, but I’m hoping that it’s not so dark that people can’t see the work itself… What I’m interested in, is ghosts. Whether they’re real or not, it’s interesting how they impact us. We’re complete opposites, they’re not here, where we are.
