Geraldine Brooks explores how ignorance, superstition and hysteria can be as fatal as any plague within her novel ‘Year of Wonders’. During the trying year of the plague superstition, ignorance, and hysteria took over the village, causing people to make irrational accusations, decisions and behave immorally, turning against each other. Brooks explores how the plague acts as a catalyst effecting each of the villagers differently on a physical and emotional level. The plague is defined as a large amount of insects or animals infesting a place causing damage, within the novel we see the villagers become these animals. Fear and anguish brought out some of the worst qualities in the villagers causing them to turn against one another creating anger, conflict and damage unto one another.

Firstly, the Everglades are an important ecosystem which reduces flooding and replenish aquifers but human actions are having a huge impact on the landscape. The rapid urban and agricultural development in the area has decreased the size of the wetlands dramatically which affects the organisms found there. This is especially important as it is home to several endangered species. Not only that, but invasive species that threaten existing wildlife by preying on or competing with them. According to Everglades.org, they’ve “contributed to nearly 70 percent of extinctions in the United States” and are the “primary cause of species endangerment.” The water itself is a major cause of decline to the area, firstly because of poor water management leading to water levels being too low or too high at the wrong times has caused a decline in many species.
It was literally a dumping ground and it even caught on fire a few times due to the toxic wastes. The phosphorus levels in Lake Erie are increasing due to the pollution causing harm to the fishes that reside in it. In 2014, Lake Erie had so much algae from pollution that it caused the City of Toledo to be left without fresh water. This algae was caused by the excessive amount of phosphorus in the lake. This excessive amount of Phosphorus is caused when the fertilizer is dumped into the lake by farmers.
People excrete wastes and litter that flow into water systems, and animal habitats, this is slowly polluting water and killing wildlife. And the more the population grows the more wasted were going to produce and cause pollution and damage to the environment. More housing and buildings being built means that were building over were habitats live, the loss of these forests leads to extinction of plants and animals. Also more people means that more goods (like clothes, TVs etc) are wanted, more jobs are needed so more factories are being built witch is affecting out air pollution, which eventually is destroying out atmosphere. Also more food is required so more intensive farming methods are used.
One specifically was Dr. William Gorgas. He saw the issue of yellow fever and decided that men could not keep dying so he took action. He did research about yellow fever and he traced it back to its source; a breed of mosquitos. Dr. William Gorgas later led a movement to clean the environment to stop the spread of yellow fever. The towns where the men that worked on the canal were staying were filthy and were not able to give the men a sanitary place to stay.
Companies have deposited their waste in the lake, which has caused the lake to be shut down because humans are getting sick and even dying from the polluted waters. Viruses, pathogens, chemicals and toxins are all part of this pollution, which affects recreation, jobs, and habitats of animals. Fishermen have not spent money fishing for sport due to the drastic reduction of the salmon population at Lake Huron. Recreational hours at the lake have also seen a drastic decrease. This devastation affects a majority of the U.S. being one of our largest sources of fresh water, and will only continue to deplete, as companies carelessly dump their waste into the lake.

The shape in the middle of the field looks like a pair of lungs with one side shown as big trees still standing and the other side filled with dirt and trees being cut down. This shows the world that tearing down our trees can hurt our lungs because the lack of oxygen being produced. This picture is telling the earth to recycle more paper used products so that workers do not need to cut down more trees on this planet. If you save the trees then you save millions of human lives.
