Mostly Air pollution is also a major concern. According to the Lake Huron Center for Coastal Conservation, “The air quality of the Ontario Lake Huron Shoreline is among the worst in Southern Ontario” Some chemicals that contribute to this Air Pollutions are pesticides, lead, mercury, PCBs, furans and dioxins. What is Pollution? Pollutions is anything that put in environment that harms or change the ecosystem. Water Pollution is a large problem to the lakes and all over the world.
It polluted the whole river as the chemicals flowed down the river Rhine. It was one of the major sources of water that flowed through four major countries of Europe. Now the contaminated water could not be used by these people. The chemicals killed many species in water. Dead fishes could be seen floating on water.
As a result of the large number of inhabitants surrounding the lakes and the many industries that depend on the area, the environment is subject to several ecological hardships such as sewage disposal, agricultural/urban runoff, and industrial effluent (Beeton, 1965). These sources of pollution have detrimental effects on local fishing and wildlife, as well as air and water quality. Since the 1950s concern about the current situation of the Great Lakes has been growing. As a result, the government and the public have been searching for practicable solutions to the potentially toxic wasteland. Magnitude of the Problem: Steel production, bulk goods transport, commercial and sport fisheries, agriculture, recreation and tourism are the main industries that encompass the economic capacity of the great lakes.
At the same time, supplies water to Kiev's 2.4 million residents. This caused a major problem to the people as now; their drinking water is contaminated with radioactive materials. Other than that, the radioactivity in the seas, lakes and rivers became a threat to aquatic life. Thankfully, the groundwater was slightly affected because the radioactive material fortunately decayed before it could reach the groundwater supplies. Four kilometers of pine trees turned reddish-brown after the accident.
This pollution has since affected their health and has resulted into more cancer deaths, miscarriages, defects in births, dying of livestock and the sick fish. The attempts to solve the problem and prosecute those involved have proven futile since the county‘s judicial system is marred by corruption. The company was required to clean up its mess and pay for the damages. The toxic waste dumped in the area is believed to be of an estimate of 18 billion gallons, and its remains are still present to date. The company that took over the ownership from Texaco was later ordered to pay eighteen billion dollars for the damages. This was to act as the reparations for the
Plastic bags take many lifetimes to biodegrade and their contents are harmful to the environment. Plastic bags are one of the most common items recovered in coastal clean ups. Animals such as turtles often mistake the plastic bags for jellyfish and eat the bags, resulting in death. Local governments have started, and should continue, to implement taxes and charges in an effort to reduce the unnecessarily high consumption of these harmful plastic bags. Why the Tax or Charge Works Plastic bag waste in Europe is a major problem.
This affects the central nervous system of fish so that they are paralyzed and can't breathe. As a result, red tide blooms often result in dead fish washing up on beaches. Red tides often occur when fresh water runoff creates a stratified surface layer above colder nutrient rich waters. Fast growing algae quickly strip away nutrients in the upper layer, leaving nitrogen
The ecological downfalls is where it hurts us today. The environment is in danger, it hurts our elk and birds for mistaken of food leaving them dead. It melts into our streams, rivers and other drinking water resources. It mixes with our water changing its salinity levels. The ice melts and the water doesn’t just disappear, this is a problem that could easily be solved but because it’s too much work for the people to lift a shovel the environment must suffer.
The immediate effect of the Oil spill impacted the wildlife which included oil-coated birds (Ducks) and sea turtles. “In-situ burning oil” (the burning of oil in a contained area on the surface of the water) was used as a method for the treatment of the oil spill which negatively impacted the environment. Hence, the Bp Oil spill negatively impacted many components of the environment and other factors, making it the largest disaster in American history. The Bp Oil Spill crisis occurred due to the company’s negligence bringing awareness to the disastrous impacts it has cause on different industries. The Bp Oil Spill greatly impacted the environment teaching the companies to strengthen the approach to preparedness and response planning.
What I mean by that is like in agriculture, phosphates are from a large amount of fertilizer that are being sprayed by farmer workers, in which they have all these different types of chemicals cause problems to the earth. Phosphates are also common ingredients in pesticides. Polluting the lakes and rivers can also result in heavy growth of algae, cyanobacteria, and making the water murky. It’s been to a point where I have seen people fishing and others are having a picnic at a nearby lake and the ones who are having the picnic actually takes their garbage and throw it off in the lake where there are live animals. When you see people that are doing that, they is putting animal’s life in danger without knowing what problems they are causing.
