This is when therapies include changes in the diet, the practice of yoga, and a strong emphasis on the connection of mind, body, and spirit (Ellis-Christensen, 2011). There are very little negative side effects associated with alternative medicine as many people are able to purchase herbs, vitamins, and other dietary supplements over-the-counter. A form of alternative medicine that is commonly used is herbal tea containing Echinacea and Chamomile. The combination of these two elements helps to strengthen the immune system of the body. Herbal teas also have the ability to suppress illness as they assist with sore muscles, stomach flu, and a cold.
Aromatherapy and Spa: Education, Treatments, and Employment Aromatherapy is the practice of using natural oils to enhance psychological and physical well being. Its practices have been known to help with many aliments including stress, depressing and arthritis. This type of therapy supposedly works by inhaling the aroma to help stimulate brain functions or absorb through the skin where it goes into the blood stream (Webring Inc. Aromatherapy at home, 2006). It is a natural way to heal the whole person and not just symptoms of a disease. It is designed to help the body use its natural ability to balance and heal itself.

There is also the possibility that by choosing standard over non-standard your might be missing out on another factor that make the herbs main component work even better. For my three herbs to compare I have chosen Bilberry, Green Tea, and St. John’s wort. Starting with Bilberry the scientific name is Vaccinium myrtillus. Bilberry is used in many ways some of which include improving night, controlling insulin levels, to treat varicose veins, and to prevent cataracts. The standardized form I came across labels the function as being used to support eye health.

However, there are a number of natural remedies that are recommended to help with morning sickness. Vitamin B6 may be an option for supplementation in pregnant women as well as ginger. Ginger decreases nausea and comes in a variety of options such as ginger biscuits, ginger gum, ginger ale, and ginger capsules. Some women admit to relief and some women deny that ginger gives them any relief from morning sickness. Peppermint tea may be useful in decreasing nausea as well as roasted dandelion root tea (Winder, 2015).
If only people would realize that by going towards a holistic approach rather than the traditional method of taking medications, people would be much healthier in the long run. A Tufts University Health and Nutrition article recently espoused a new research review that “shows that boosting your potassium level can be just as important for healthy blood pressure – and may protect your heart in the bargain” (Boosting 8). The medical industry might have you believe otherwise. Oftentimes doctors and specialists will prescribe heart medicine or blood pressure medicines before ever even contemplating the much less intrusive, and equally as effective, holistic approach that might include eating bananas or avocados (both are chock full of potassium). The same article offered additional everyday common sense steps to take including; eschewing the salt-shaker and reducing salt intake from processed foods as “an obvious and responsible step” (Boosting 8).
Jessa Thomson Professor Stillwell USem 102 CTR 4 February 1, 2011 ToT CTR 4 Summary: This chapter in Trick or Treatment describes the pros and cons of herbal medicine. Many people resort to herbal medicine to treat their different ailments. But some of the treatments cause more harm than good. For example: St. John’s Wort can treat mild to moderate depression, but for someone with severe depression or a mental illness it does no good and could even make symptoms worse. Personal Statement: I liked the tables in the book that showed whether or not the herbs/ natural medicine were shown to have a good effect on what they were supposed to.

Transcendental Meditation is most effective in reducing apprehension, improving mental health, increasing self awareness, and ridding the abuse of cigarettes, drugs, and alcohol.
