Medical Benefits of Tea People love tea for different reasons. These include the different aromas and flavors, the warmth our bodies get from drinking it, and how it calms and relaxes us. These are just the feel good reasons, however; most people do not know the health benefits of tea. It can help prevent heart attacks, strokes, arthritis, high blood pressure and cancer. It protects bones, boosts the immune system, keeps the mind young, and aids in weight loss. If people do not like a certain flavor there are many others to choose from, each containing a different substance that will lead to a health advantage. As more discoveries are made about how tea helps health it may begin being used as a medicine. For starters, what is tea? Tea is one of the most ancient and popular beverages consumed around the world. It is made from a leaf of the plant Camellia sinensis. It must be grown, harvested, and has to go through an oxidation process before it can be consumed as a drink. The amount of oxidation and other aspects of processing determine a tea’s type. Black tea accounts for seventy-five percent of the world’s tea consumption. In the United States, United Kingdom, and Europe, black tea is the most common type of tea consumed; green tea is popular in Japan and China. Oolong and white tea are consumed less often throughout the world, however. One of the many reasons that tea has become such a popular and worldwide beverage is because of the health benefits. (National Cancer Institute). Each type of tea has a similar ingredient that helps to enhance our wellbeing. Tea would not service our bodies without the one entity it includes: antioxidants. Due to the presence of antioxidants, experts say that tea is healthier than water.
