A true award of personality illuminates what the Medal of Honor is about, an individuals deserving path to the recognition is inspirational and unforgettable. Expressing outstanding gallantry throughout the duration of war will earn an individual a granted award by the president of the United States of America. This special recognition is the Medal of Honor. On December 21, 1861 President Abraham Lincoln signed into law, a Navy Medal of Valor that was implemented to be awarded by the actions of courageousness during battle. While conducting operations in Da Nang, Hue City, and Khe Sanh, battles fought and won, through shoulder high brush, and hidden spider holes, which were well camouflaged, made warfare against the North Vietnamese Army strenuous. The gruesome encounters concluded with 57 Medals of Honor earned by Marines for their exceptional engagements. Despite the Vietnam War’s unpopularity with Americans. Its acceptance was of no importance because the men, who showed the amount of bravery and character, fought and displayed actions that would eventually earn them such a distinguishable award. These men are now heroes that we recognize in history. Their heroism will lead others such as themselves to the same exceptional gallantry that they demonstrated. Marines such as PFC. James Anderson, PFC. Daniel Bruce, PFC. Douglas Dickey, and countless others earned the Medal of Honor by jumping on deadly grenades and absorbing the full and complete blast of the explosion saving their fellow brothers. Notice the rank of these men; nothing states that other young junior Marines can’t do the same. Without a doubt their performance was outstanding, but I want to focus my attention on another Marine, Lcpl. Jose Francisco Jimenez. Jimenez was with second platoon of K Company, on a search and clear operation. As he and his unit drew closer to the suspected enemy position it came under intense small arms fire from 20 North Vietnamese soldiers and anti-aircraft weapons (The American GI Forum, 2011). In vigorous terrain of tall grass and hidden pits he realized where the threat that was among his unit. Without hesitation L.Cpl. Jimenez darted through the brush and lead his platoon in the attack. Maneuvering in the sight of heavy automatic weapons fire and blasting grenades, he charged enemy contact and closed within 15 meters before killing his first enemy soldier with shots from his M-16. Disregarding his own life L.Cpl. Jimenez bolted through 20 meters of open area. With the anti-aircraft weapon, that had been assaulting his unit with intense fire in his vision. He ignored heavy enemy fire; he set out a vicious assault on the anti-aircraft weapon from his M-16 and grenades ultimately destroying the upheld enemy position. His primary mission was a success, but he didn’t stop there. He then shouted words of encouragement to his Marines, and charged more enemy soldiers. L.Cpl. Jimenez dropped to his belly and low crawled his way to enemy contact. Approaching the North Vietnamese soldiers unnoticed he threw a grenade into the hole from which they were in.
