Summary “SEALs are masters of strategy, professional marksmen with rifles, artists with machine guns, and, if necessary, pretty handy with knives.”(Marcus Luttrell) The Lone Survivor is an action packed adventurous tale of the tragedy of operation Redwing. In late June 2005 four Navy SEALs went into the mountains of a Pakistani border to capture or kill a notorious al Qaeda leader. Within twenty four hours of the mission only one was still alive the others fell in battle against the Taliban fighting to the death. This is the story of Marcus Luttrell and his eyewitness account of the tragedy of Operation Redwing. Marcus begins his tale of how he became a Navy SEAL and what they go through to become one. The training to become a SEAL is the hardest test to pass in our Navy branch. Out of the 164 people who attempted the training only 32 were remaining. After finishing his course Marcus moves on to complete a few more courses and some sniper classes. On June 27 Operation Redwing was a go, they sent SEAL team 10 to capture or kill a dangerous al Qaeda leader. They came in the dead of night and dropped down by helicopter and were completely on their own. They circled around the village for hours trying to find a good vantage point for outlook. They didn’t see any Taliban soldiers around the village. They move up the mountain and encounter some goat herders who gave away their position. A few hours later they were encountered by hundreds of Taliban soldiers. They were then engaged in a firefight as they tried to move down the mountain. Axe, Danny, and Mikey fell in combat leaving Marcus all by himself to hide and fight all alone on the mountain. With a broken nose and with a wound from being shot he traveled 7 miles around the mountain. He encountered the Pashtuan tribe who decided to protect him at all costs.
