Because Wintour is the head leader of the magazine, Coddington has to endure a lot rejecting of her own ideas because Anna Wintour says so. In the movie, Coddington is also shown as the victim to Wintour’s aggressive personality. At the end of the movie, their relationship takes another turn. Women have more opportunities but face more challenges. Although it may seem women have independence and freedom, the overall condition is not where it should be. Many families have made the roles more equal but the playing field remains uneven when it comes to jobs, housework, and childcare. In her satire “I Want a Wife” Judy Brady states,” My wife must arrange to loose time at work and not lose the job.” Basically, Brady is saying some women work numerous jobs while maintaining family as top priority and involving their selves in their children’s extracurricular activities unlike men.
Mike and Jackie, the adults, have two daughters and are in some serious financial trouble. Their lives completely changed when Kyle, a random kid from Ohio, came into it. Throughout this movie, there was a lot of ups and downs, but one thing stayed constant and that was Jackie. She was the foundation of sanity in this film. Jackie has a good combination of the all the ingredients a good mother needs.
For months she was bedridden, leaning upon her family for support; unwavering in her efforts to combat the deadly disease. She courageously overcame it, although developing a mortal impediment of damage of right leg and foot. She then went on to be become a spirited student trying to prove to herself and others that she could be independent and successful, which were not always expected of a typical Latina in the early nineteen hundreds. This was a time when Mexico was being revolutionized, not only politically but also culturally. The arts were embraced, and people like Kahlo and Rivera (her artist husband) were recognized as influencers and surrealists, not merely street folk trying to earn a living.
When Granny speaks and thinks of her life, she identifies herself as a strong woman, Granny mentions many of the things she had to do on her own when she was younger due to the fact that her husband, John, died at such an early age. From the reader’s point of view, it is clear to see that even though Granny is ill in bed, she still gives the reader the impression that she feels her illness is “nothing serious” and something temporary. Granny feels like it is something she will be able to get up and walk away from soon enough. Towards the end of the story, however, we start to sense a change in Granny and notice how her illness is finally starting to affect and weaken her. Henrik Ibsen depicts how the conscious and subconscious motives and desires are obtained. Kristine Linde is a woman who has had to give up her dreams due to circumstances beyond her control. She was once in love but because her mother “was bedridden and helpless”and she “had to provide for two younger brothers”(Ibsen, 2011, p. 556) she was forced to marry for convenience of the situation. We can tell this has made her look at life in a more realistic and wise view than that of her friend Mrs Nora Helmer the main character. Mrs Linde has had to work hard and was not afforded love and children which she longed to have.
The decisions she makes shows us, her desire to improve health and education level, but to also be finally making something out of herself other than just a house wife. These changes she is going through tells us her trying to gain her own independence. The reason for change in Norma’s life is the return of her husband Leroy. After 14 year of trucking Leroy’s injury causes him to come back home permanently, which causes unhappiness to Norma, leading her to say, “In some ways, a woman prefers a man who wonders”(Mason 76). Norma says this towards the end of the story, when Norma is essentially telling Leroy she wants to be alone.
