Harmonium and Nettles Harmonium and Nettles both highlight the theme of memory. As they both are looking back over past memories that are painful, the poems feature the feelings of being helpless in stopping the hurt that was caused. The writer in Harmonium feels remorse for the things he hadn’t said to his father as Armitage states “then mouth in reply some shallow sorry phrase or word too starved of breath to make itself heard”. The writer in Nettles is protective of the recurring threat to his child that he can’t destroy. “rain had called up tall recruits behind the shed,” this quote shows the father cannot destroy them .They differ in the way they felt powerless however as in Nettles the father is feeling powerless because of a physical threat whereas in Harmonium it is an emotional threat of the inevibility of death and unspoken feelings that makes the writer feel powerless.
Philip Larkin and Dannie Abse have very different and contrasting attitudes to relationships. On the whole, Larkin presents the concepts of love and marriage as very superficial and meaningless, whereas Abse appears to be less such nihilistic and more open and positive about such topics. Throughout Wild Oats, Philip Larkin uses various literary techniques, such as imagery, structure and symbolism to convey certain aspects of love and the passing of time. Larkin's poetry often relates to the social and cultural views upon love and marriage in his time. In Wild Oats It explains that a person, over the course of time, comes to realise that his greatest desires of love, are unattainable, and second best things will have to suffice.
In the poem “Singh Song!”, the poet uses repetition to show the persona of Singh as being very personal and intimate when he spends the little time that he has with his “newly bride”. The repetition of the word “baby” tells the reader that Singh is happy being married to his wife and that he gives her a high status in his life. The repetition of “my bride” is triple refrained which perhaps suggests that Singh has a surprising nature about his wife. This creates an interesting character as it tells us that he is willing to stop working and go against his father’s orders just to spend time with his wife. Despite the criticism he receives from his customers, Singh seems to hold his wife as a major and main priority in his life and could suggest that his emotional and mental wellbeing depends on his wife.
The Friar responds with, “Young men’s love then lies/ Not truly in their hearts but, in their eyes jesu maria, what the deal of brine/ Hath washes thy sallow cheeks for Rosaline!”(2.3.68-90). In the first act, Romeo thought himself to be in love with Rosaline. Romeo had been distraught over the fact that his beloved Rosaline was going to become a nun. Romeo would never be able to love Rosoline, or be with her. Friar Lawrence makes fun of Romeo saying that young men only love what they see.
Paris is often thought of as the city of love and romance. However James Fenton opens his poem with the sentence “Don't talk to me of love.” By starting with a morose tone and a negative imperative it not only shows the narrator is getting over a broken relationship, but it also shows the reader that the narrator finds it a difficult subject to talk about. Fenton then goes on to say “I've had an earful / And I get tearful.” Rather than both words of the rhyming pair coming at the end of lines, “tearful” is in the middle of the second line. The rhymes actually seem to give a lighter atmosphere to the first stanza, even though Fenton is feeling down. He describes himself as “one of your talking wounded,” which of course is a play on the phrase “walking wounded” used to describe people who have only slight injuries.

That quote was said by Romeo in the very beginning of the book because he is so love sick over this girl named Rosaline. Throughout the book Romeo and Juliet, both Romeo and Juliet’s perspective on love changes along with their personalities. As I said before in the beginning of the book Romeo and Juliet, Romeo is gloomy and feeling hopeless about love because Rosaline (the women he “loves”) is not going to get married.

In his short stories, protagonists Mr. Hooper in “The Minister’s Black Veil” and Georgiana in “The Birthmark,” experience the negative social gaze of those around them. For Reverend Hooper, it is his congregation that views his black veil as the symbol of sin or imperfection – there is something abnormal about his wearing of the veil. In Georgiana’s case, her husband, Alymer, views her birthmark as an unnatural imperfection which has manifested itself into the shape of a hand on her cheek.
