Character Development * At the beginning of the novel when he is first married to Mariam, Rasheed seems like a nice man. He does seem to take care of her; he compliments her cooking and etc. It is only after the loss of their first child and the multiple miscarriages that follow does Rasheed start to lash out at her.
CRANK & THE LOVELY BONES Synthesis Essay English 11 Honours In both novels, Crank by Ellen Hopkins and The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold are both narrated by young female characters, who both have family issues. The two protagonist' parents drift apart and do not have a good, loving, relationship. These conflicts within the girls' families cause not only problems at home but an internal struggle for the protagonists. Crank is narrated by Kristina, who also refers to herself as 'Bree'. Kristina's parents had separated when she was quite young and her father moved far away after the divorce.
In the Story “I Stand Here Ironing,” by Tillie Olsen the circumstances that led the narrator to leave her daughter in the care of others are influenced by the fact that she was a young mother abandoned by the baby’s father; therefore forced to work, affecting the very well being of her daughter Emily. The narrator emphasizes, “I was nineteen. It was pre-relief, pre- WPA world of depression” (608). Many women in the thirties were confronting poverty and very oppressive conditions. This was an era where hardship was in an uproar, and it exemplifies the reality that she had very little resources.
The characteristics made the conflict of the novel a lot more intense though out the novel. Charles Kingshaw was the main victim of the whole novel. In the novel, he mentioned that he lost his father when he was young. ‘My father ‘s dead’ He was angry, not hurt. (pg.18) His father who died in war was his hero to him and when Hooper asked him about his father, he felt like Hooper was insulting his father so he was unhappy about it.
'The broken wing' refers to Rowan's shrinking family, who are battling to survive after Jack's death. The loss of Jack has made a huge impact on entire Clark family and especially on Rowans’ life. Furthermore, this loss was unbearable to his loving mother which resulted to tear apart the bonds of Clark family. Jack’s departure has left an exceptionally large pain in his beloved mother, giving her a nervous breakdown. In addition, their father leaves the family forcing Rowan to replace him in the Clark family.
Her mother died when she is young, just before the novel begins. She decides to come to Barcelona all alone, by herself, to discover how her mother’s family is and to pursue a better education. The writer reveals through several female characters that women make many sacrifices. Nora’s nanny has to abandon her own children in order to be able to provide for herself. She accepts a job as Nora’s nanny in order to do so. The Nanny considers herself propitious, being “a poor girl who’d been led astray.” (Isben pg 55) Mrs. Linde has to leave the love of her life Mr. Krogstad in order to marry someone who is able to support her financially. ”My mother was alive then, and was bedridden and helpless, and I have to provide for my two younger brothers; So I did not think I was justified in refusing his offer.” (Isben pg 20) Mrs. Linde has to make this sacrifice because she is required to support her mother and two brothers.
This is compounded by the death of her brother in the war, what brought her to her childhood and adolescence, making her to write about her early life. Another big argument is that this story is based on a real event that happened to her during her own childhood. The wealthy Burnell family in many of her stories is here called the Sheridans, as the story opens their sensitive daughter Laura is excited by the prospect of her family's impending afternoon fete. However, the Sheridans' idyllic afternoon is marred by the death of one of the workmen in the area just outside the Sheridan manse. The family he has left behind lives at the bottom of the hill from the lawn where the party will take place.
She didn’t want to go and for that matter did all in her power to get her mum cancel the vacation . She had developed too much hatred for her dad that she didn’t talk to him for three good years . She ignored her father leaving him with no chance to explain why he left them . She began to hung out with the most dangerous teenagers ;she stayed out till ungraceful hours . In the end Ronnie finds the skeleton in the cupboard ; she finally got to know the reason why her parents divorced .
Moreover, it is also a story about a woman who must live in the presence and shadow of her overbearing father. In the story she is the main character and this opening scene of the funeral shows how she is remembered. The story than moves to a different time before her funeral.
