Carlson Curley George Candy Lennie the boss Slim (a) ............. is small with a dark face and quick eyes. His arms and legs are thin. (b) ............. is tall and wide and his walk is slow and heavy. (c) ............. is a short fat man. (d) ............. is a thin angry young man with brown eyes.
Kind, relaxed, and poor, he is the perfect gentleman to educate Pip in the ways of the upper class. Herbert’s father, Matthew, is kind as well, but his absentminded carelessness makes him a weak figure even in his own household.
“The first man was small and quick, dark of face, with restless eyes and sharp, strong features” (Steinbeck 2). George is tiny and much more intelligent than Lennie. Also, Lennie is Caucasian, and George is African American. George can be defined by a few distinct characteristics. Even though Lennie really bothers George at some points, he is a wonderfully loving and devoted friend and would never actually leave Lennie.
Whilst the boys don’t have money or goods to trade, they do have the conch, and the boy who owns the conch is the boy who is wealthiest on the island, and therefore the boy who is able to control the other boys. The fact that Piggy ‘what intelligence had been shown was traceable to Piggy’ (p.18-9) seems to be unimportant to the boys, suggesting that intelligence is not the winning factor in electing a leader. Golding carefully selects Ralph as the
Piggy is one of the first characters introduced in the novel, and he is described as "the fat boy", which encourages the reader to like him and sympathize towards him, even if nobody else does. Piggy proves to have a great deal of importance as his knowledge and common sense is profound compared to the other boys among him. For example, he is the first to recognize that their chances of rescue are very slim, he knows very well that the beast isn't real, and his ideas of survival surpass the other boy’s plans. Throughout the novel, Piggy remains wise, but this voice of wisdom is ignored. It is clear only in the book that Piggy is intellectually superior and physically inferior.
He tries to take a scientific approach and questions about it. He claims that he knows that there is no beast. I think that Piggy was the smartest and had one of the best views of the beast. He doesn’t fear it, which shows that Piggy is different from the rest of the boys. Later on in the novel, Piggy is one of the very few boys who are not savages.
One of the main static characters goes by the name of Simon. He is a quiet, knowledgeable, dark haired, skinny boy. Overall, Simon is a truly good character that can be thought of as Jesus Christ. Golding shows the reader this in the novel by Simon’s dialogue, actions, and his death. First of all, Golding expresses Simon as Christ like figure by the dialogue he uses.
Steinbeck shows Slim to be the most authoritative of the pair when he says “Slim sat down on a box and George took his place opposite.” This quote suggests that Slim is dominant because he takes his seat first; meaning that he is the more important and that George respects him. George is shown to be inferior because he “took his place” like an insolent child. The author is showing that Slim is in charge of the relationship and that George is the follower. Steinbeck is giving this view to the reader because he wants the reader to realise that the relationship mirrors that of George and Lennie, as one man is dominant. George describes Lennie as making him “seem God damn smart”; just as George makes Slim seem smarter, due to Steinbeck belittling George throughout the
3. Wheelers action suggests about him that he is a very friendly individual because like in this quote “He roused up and gave me a good day”. 4. The narrator thinks opposite because in the short story he says “Which showed me that far from his imagination there was anything ridiculous or funny about his story”. 5.
How does Jack use the beast to control the other boys? 4. Of all the characters, it is Piggy who most often has useful ideas and sees the correct way for the boys to organize themselves. Yet the other boys rarely listen to him and frequently abuse him. Why do you think this is the case?
