Long Term Effects of Child Abuse Lauren Campbell Family Systems Reading and Research Mark Smith November 8th 2012 As stated by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police child abuse refers to “any form of physical, psychological, social, emotional or sexual maltreatment of a child hereby the survival, safety, self-esteem, growth and development of the child are endangered”(Royal Mounted Canadian Police, 2008). There are four main types of child abuse: neglect, emotional, physical and sexual. Abuse in the form of neglect is failure to give attention or care to a child resulting in serious emotional or physical harm. Behavioral indicators of neglect are: frequent absence from school, inappropriate clothing for weather, dirty clothes, inappropriate acts, abuse of alcohol or drugs, begging or stealing food, and seeks inappropriate affection. Some physical indicators of neglect are: poor hygiene, unattended physical or medical needs, consistent lack of supervision, underweight, failure to thrive, constant hunger, and under nourished. Emotional abuse is demeaning actions of verbal attacks that impact a child’s self-esteem and self worth. Behavioral indicators of emotional abuse are: depression, withdrawal, aggression, too neat/clean, habit disorders such as sucking, biting, rocking, learning disorders, sleeping disorders, unusual fearfulness, obsessive compulsive behavior, phobias, and developmental delays. Physical indicators of emotional abuse are: bed wetting, headaches, nausea, speech disorders, disruptive behavior, and lags in physical development. Physical abuse is the intentional use of force against a child resulting in injury or causing bodily harm. Behavioral indicators of physical abuse are: inconsistent explanation for injuries or cannot remember, scared of adults, flinch is unexpectedly touched, extremely aggressive or extremely withdrawn, frightened of
