9-14-12 Pages 1-2 Suffering a devastating injury to his knee, John Kanan ’14 is forced to deal with everlasting difficulties that impact his athletic career and everyday life. Still today, Kanan has to push through these troubles to be a game changing player on the soccer field. It was the first game of kanan’s sophomore year soccer season; he was a starter on the team playing right midfield when out of blind sight he collided with an opposing player. “I was running as fast as my body would let me”, said Kanan. “The only thing I was focusing on was winning the ball.
Soccer has been a huge part of my life since I was very young. The very first time I touched a soccer ball, I fell in love. I started playing at 6 years old. The first team I played for was coached by one of my best friends dads, Jim Crosby. Our team name was, The Mean Green Fighting Machines.
It may be a cliché, but soccer was my life growing up! In Bob Greene’s essay “Cut”, he explains how being cut from a basketball team in 7th grade made him feel, and how it shaped him into the person he is today. He describes the feeling of inadequacy by not being good enough. Bob Greene portrays how that event made him stronger, “never to allow someone to tell me that I’m not good enough again” (Miller, “Cut” 86). As a young child, I lived my life to play soccer.

West Pymble Football Club provided me with very good coaching which was essential in my development as a footballer. It wasn’t until Under 12s until I really knew my potential as a footballer. My coach that year was a guy called Greg Fuchs. Greg was a former Australian Schoolboy player who played in the same team as the likes of Liverpool star Harry Kewell and Luke Wilkshire who both played for Australia.
Second, he possessed an astonishing intuition that resulted in long gains or touchdowns, when other quarterbacks would have been sacked. And third, he was a calm leader and an inspiration to everyone around him for more than a decade, (Montana, & Mitchell, 2006). Joe Montana would become the greatest NFL regular season and Super Bowl quarterback ever or at least to date; Joe’s climb to the top of the NFL was not ominous. Joe was not drafted by the 49ers until the third round in 1979, unlike most super star quarterbacks, that almost always go immediately in the first round draft. Joe Montana shined during his high school athletic career, but had to earn every spot he played after that, (Montana, & Mitchell,
O. J. loved the game of football since he was a young child. At the age of 9, he played in his first little league game in his hometown of San Francisco. He continued his football career in high school. Simpson was a standout and in his senior year, he led the city in scoring. Although, to his dismay, despite his power establishing play on the field, his grades weren’t up to par enough to receive college scholarships.
When he was twelve years old, he made a bet with some boys in town that he could run five miles in thirty minutes. While his parents told him not to make bets he could not keep, he was determined to “…show both of them...and everyone else…that I’m a winner.” He ran the five miles in thirty minutes with twenty seconds to spare and won $2.00. That next year, at the age of 13, he played football for the first time while wearing boots with cleats attached to the bottom of them. When Bryant was 14, a traveling bear act came through town. The owner offered $1.00 a minute for anyone who could pin down the bear.
The two trained together every day, and while kids went with their families on vacations over summer, they just trained even more. The constant training and high standards left Todd unfit to live a healthy lifestyle once he got to college. By the time Todd got to USC, he was a national star. He broke the national high school passing record and became the first ever freshman to start for USC. Everything
They are all different ages and sizes; some small and boney, others tall and chubby, but they all have the desire to play soccer for the school. Some want to make it on varsity others just want to be a part of a soccer team so Junior Varsity fits them well. What amazes me is even the out of shape kids keep on returning, even though they know what they are getting them self’s into .Which gives me even more motivation to keep going, because if they keep returning even after throwing up the nasty school then I know I have no excuse. In the weight room, it sounds like the lunch room, full of Mindless monkey chatter of either actual interesting information or mindless talk to dull the thought of how sore all we will be
Alex’s dream is to become a professional soccer player. Soccer has been his favorite sport since he was 2 years old. He never misses a soccer game on television when it’s soccer season. Although he may not have the ability to run across the soccer field, he does have the upper body strength and fast reflex to be a goalie. He asks why he cannot run, walk, or play with the other children.
