In Stephan Crane's short story "The Open Boat," one of the many themes that can be pulled out is that of community. He stresses the importance of the each individual's role in the group setting. Crane uses a life and death situation in which men must depend on one another and establishes that without group cohesion and unity they will not make it out alive. He shows the group being given false hopes from outside powers but, how in the end the group must unite together for survival and not rely on anything but themselves. Throughout the story, paralleling an actually event in his life Crane accentuates the intimacy and thought process of the four men as opposed to an epic story.
Background Info Captain James Cook anchored off the east coast of Poverty Bay in October of 1769 (Flude, 2001). He spent about six months in what he called the “bay of islands” (Flude, 2001). James Cook was the first European explorer to gain an insight for the “hostile” (Flude, 2001), as labeled by the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman, indigenous people. However, James Cook was lucky enough to receive guidance from a “learned Tahitian” (PBS), Tupa’ia. Cook was also learned the basics of the language, and was able to ask about how the locals controlled the canoes and places they had explored with them (PBS).
Leading Marines LCpl Ozuna, Sergio November 18, 2013 Leading Marines The most important responsibility in the Marine Corps is leading Marines. According to General C.E. Mundy, if we expect Marines to follow, we must provide the education of the heart and of the mind win on the battlefield and in the barracks, in war and in peace. Our actions as Marines everyday must embody the legacy of those who went before the U.S. It is often said that you are a direct reflection of your leaders, which is why it is essential that leaders fulfill their obligations to their Marines and the Corps with good ethical standards.
From the moment European settlers arrived to present-day. Americans have earned their freedoms and we need to proud to be proud of that. Patriots represent exactly what the flag does; strength, bravery, purity, innocence and that we are on guard for enemies. Patriots don’t betray their country. Patriots will support their country and help improve it in its darkest hours.
The director worked very hard to be as accurate as possible in his story, to clothe the characters correctly, to depict the scenes as they would have been, but there were times that the director and screenwriters were forced to come up with their own attitudes and reasoning of the Tribe, to show that they were not inhumane, that they also understood love and compassion, and they had to show that the Jesuits, though they believed they were right, were a self-righteous, and unfaltering in own beliefs, would stop at nothing to convert these people. B. A filmmaker has a short amount of time to captivate audiences with a story, and in that time, if there needs to be adjustments to the story to make it shorter, or add emphasis on a character or event, it most often will be done. History is not a black-and-white subject that can easily be told within an hour and thirty minutes without falter. There will be details cut, scenes added, and truths bent to get a directors point across.
In the beginning, the captain feels that he has lost his sense of direction due to not being used to letting others take charge. Without his sense of authority intact, he feels disconnected from the world, and his spirit becomes dismantled. However, since he was not able to contribute in the way he preferred, he led the way by giving specific instructions to the other characters in order to keep the dinghy afloat. Every member on the boat follows his directions. He commands very respectably.
In Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain shows Huck as someone who pushes away harmful people but also brings closer those he sees as being good. Huck joins in the drama of Jim’s life because he cares about Jim not being “sold down the river”(11). We can also see that Huck does everything possible to stay out of harm way while dealing with Jim’s well being. This is easily seen when looking at his relationship with Jim versus his relationship with the King and Duke, and the comparison he makes between them and pap. Huck’s relationship with the king and duke begins as an adventure, “the first thing that come out was that these chaps didn’t know one another” (154); Twain, when explaining how they ended up on the canoe with Huck, never truly tells whether or not they knew each other before meeting Huck.
First the author shows the theme by integrating character’s actions throughout the story. Before Charlie becomes intelligent he wrote, “I want to be smart.” (Pg. 221) I think this quote confirms the theme because since he wasn’t smart he could have separated himself from smart people. As Charlie was reading a book called Robinson Crusoe he wrote, “I feel sorry because he’s all alone and has no friends.” (Pg. 229) I believe this quote reveals the moral because as he reads this book he find out Crusoe is all alone and isolated and even though Charlie doesn’t realize it yet he himself is isolated and lonely as well.
Throughout the majority of the novel it is obvious to see that Ralph is not the rightful leader, and that Jack should be the leader as he has a strong sense of control over the island but does not have the same agenda when it comes to being rescued as he does not see the importance in the fire, whereas Ralph does, “You let the fire out.” This shows Ralph to understand that to escape from the island the boys need to create a signal fire for other ships. Jack is the apparent rightful leader, but the one that shows the intelligence and is the main reason to why Ralph became chief is Piggy, as from the start he understands the severity of the situation “We may stay here till we die.” Piggy’s intelligence is shown through the
