Flashback Pluto, a high school senior, lives on planet Ballopia, is what the girls call drop dead handsome, radiant honey color skin, ripped body, captivating eyes, and a convivial smile of perfect pearly whites, that snares you into his magical presence. He lives the life of a trust fund baby with his uncle “B Ball”, in the city of Easy Basket, on Sky Hook Drive, the envy of his classmates. When asked what she thought about Pluto, Proserpina said, “Everyone gravitate to him, he has the latest of high end luxuries, including a sleek, and stylish customize high performance, candy apple red, 918 Spyder Porsche, that goes 0- 100 in .05 seconds, the envy of all the boys. ” “The girls line up to date him, surrendering everything for
But during this economic recession, college students have been having a difficult time staying in the college path, especially working class students. The lack of moral support from their families prevents these unfortunate students to finish their college education. The increase of college tuition and limited financial aid are causing students to go into debt, making them hesitant whether they should keep studying or not. Also it’s preventing students from picking needed major but because the low paycheck they are not sure if they will be able to be sustained. But college drop outs also can able be due to the unequal college preparation given in high schools.
I felt that the article was very unjust and it felt like he really had no clue to what really goes on in school. For example he states in his article that “Consider the schools. They receive more than $40 billion a year in federal aid. Despite the aid — and all the federal mandates that go with it — average school test scores have been essentially flat for decades. Federal intervention has failed to improve scores in part because the top-down rules that come with aid have squelched local innovation.” This statement is utterly false.
Respect is a huge and beneficial thing that people need to have today, and within the past twenty years it seems that the respect from the younger generation. Many parents seem to spoil their children more than what they used to. Parents don’t just spoil their children with material things, but children are also spoiled in ways of how to treat others. Children do not seem to have the need to treat strangers with respect. Younger generation are completely revolved around themselves and seem to take in no consideration for others.
Younger Americans these days are very much involved in the communities. I have noticed that some of my underprivileged peers are not as involved as much as I am. The gap that Putnam and Sander talk about between upper middle class and the lower middle class’ involvement grows wider each year. The latter of the two finds no interest in becoming involved within the community. Being born in 1995, I would be classified as the end of the 9/11 generation; I was too young at the time to remember what had happened that day yet like the kids that are the older ones in the generation I and many others my age are socially engaged.
As far as the educational systems within the juvenile justice system there also is a lack of funding to appropriately educate the offenders. Many of the offenders are drop outs needing the basic fundamental educational tools. With the economy and lack of funding, minimal supplies, man hours for teaching staff and curriculum are appearing to be viewed as sub-standard, and below the bare
The lack of school material, clothes, or even living in terrible conditions can lead to the not reaching their full potential due to the lack of motivation. The government in 2012 released 3.5 billion dollars to The Native American Reservations, which for 350,000 people is equivalent to 1000 dollars (Volz, “$3.4B Indian Lawsuit Ends, Disbursements to Begin”). However, how far might this money go in a struggling household? The insufficient environment that Native Americans live in is nothing like we might find in any cities in the Northwest. The lack of motivation caused by years of not having a job and watching your family suffer in poverty is a condition that not too many of us are familiar with.
“Many states and school districts are finding it increasingly difficult to implement performance pay programs. Mounting budgetary constraints and research that has shown that these programs have little or no impact on student performance.” (Blazer & MDCPS, 2011) No teacher will take less pay and work just as hard or harder to educate students. Teachers will flock to higher performing schools to get paid. I viewed it as the school system might as well open “Gladiatorial Games” outside achieving and over achieving schools. I have witnessed 20-year teachers either leaving the same school they have been at for years to go to a new achieving schools or retiring to avoid dealing with the Merit pay system.
Poverty has increased due to a high unemployment rate, lower wages for many people, and a decreasing amount of public assistance benefits. Since the start of the recession, many people have lost their jobs and have been unable to find new employment or have been forced to work for wages far lower than they had previously been paid. In 1996, the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program, which provided cash assistance to poor families with children, was replaced with a grant program called Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF). This program has not been able to keep up with inflation causing a higher poverty level among the already poor which has resulted in families not being able to afford housing (“Why are People Homeless,”
Approximately 40 % of children born after 2000 will have these problems due to their unhealthy lifestyles. Schools have also cut down on the amount of physical education taught in schools; because of this many students are living a more sedentary lifestyle which only increases their chances of becoming obese. If we can mandate 5 healthy meals a day along with at least an hour of vigorous activity each day then maybe we can reduce the numbers. My goal for, Mandatory fitness and Nutrition in schools throughout West Virginia, is to decreases the in evidence of childhood obesity through a planned nutritional and physical activity program.
