Sally Ferrell’s claim that the military targets rural and poor neighborhoods is understandable, unfortunately it is not correct. Recruiters are required to contact all students in their assigned areas. Most assigned areas consist of not only lower class neighborhoods, but also very affluent ones. In the upper class schools, the students usually have more options available to them for higher education directly out of high school. This is due to parents that can easily afford to spend thousands of dollars out of pocket for a four year degree.
“The Case Against College Education” Thesis: College is not for everyone and it is absurd that society puts so much pressure on attending it. SR# 1: We are pushing students into college who are not meant for it. -40% of students who enrolled in college drop out. SR# 2: Benefits of putting more people in college are oversold. -the college wage premium is an illusion.
Malcolm X goes on to say that he would spend the rest of his days reading, “If I weren’t out here every day battling the white man.” Malcolm X describes prison as his college. He thinks that no one got more out of prison that he did because of what he was able to accomplish with reading and writing. Malcolm X believes that normal colleges have too many distractions to truly be effective. I believe that Malcolm X overcame a huge obstacle by not being able to read and write. Having a friend for Malcolm X to emulate was probably the turning point and the motivation for him.
Remember you have to eat and unless you’re on a meal plan (which is still basically paying) you will have to go out and buy your own things to eat there is no mommy or daddy there anymore to help make sure your mouth is fed so you’ll have to try to save as much as you can to provide for yourself. Enough with all the food talk what about your books the most important thing in college is for you to expand your knowledge and without books it will be hard for you to gain that knowledge. I researched a few college textbooks and the prices look like a monthly car payment. The cheapest book I’ve seen was about $150 now imagine you have 5 classes you do the math that’s $750 dollars. Now imagine all your professors want you to have the textbooks immediately but you have no way to pay for the books because you spent your money on items you didn’t need or eating out when you didn’t need to.
In the past, one could support their family without a college education and still have the means to live comfortably. However that is not the case anymore. In today’s society all of the high paying jobs require and demand college experience. These jobs that are at the high paying end of the spectrum have changed their basic requirements because of technology rapidly increasing day by day, getting more complicated and difficult-which makes them want to make sure that their employees are properly trained. This however, does not sit well with people who are becoming unemployed or who have seniority at their current jobs.
the first thing that we can choose to look at would be at his school. they support him eith his education, reconizing his talent whtn other people could not and they transfer him to a private school in hope that he will achieve greater success there. not only did they want him to show his talents off, but they also wanted to make him feel comfortable at his new school so they placed him on the basketball team. They had Jamal's best intrestes in mind when doing so. another social insitiution is william, who not only supporst his writing talents, but also helps him gain confidence within his work.
Some students are successful at connecting their in-campus and off-campus activities while other are not. Light asserts that he found out that “those students who make connections between what goes on inside and outside the classroom report a more satisfying college experience” (p. 14). In order to prove this, Light interviewed a few students whose life-decisions had changed because of the meta-curricular activities that they took up during their vacations. Light concluded that this study would be helpful for admission officers who should realize that they should admit their students and then get in their way (in a constructive sense) to help them make these
If you attend a community college you would be able to work and go to school easier because of the flexible schedules community colleges offer. Community colleges have more night classes and schedule options available. (Pros and Cons, 2012) Your attendance may not be required all the time for certain classes. (Pros and Cons, 2012) The workload remains consistently light compared to universities which helps those who want a life outside of school. At a community college you can knock out your general courses and explore your other interests on a schedule that works for you.
Although many people want to experience living on campus at a big name university, community colleges provide better opportunities without costing a fortune. In the end, students will be floating in their dreams rather than drowning in
Eric Litterman Greg Winterhalter Capstone Paper Beginning my college education at SVC was not a difficult choice, but going off to college no where I had chosen was also a bit scary. The courses at SVC and the instructors made the transition from high school to college very easy for me. The Quest for Success class was at first a bit foreign to me as I had not taken a course like this ever before. But after the discussions began to take place and learning the history of our college soon became interesting to learn. The social interactions and cultural events showed me parts of our area I may not have known existed.
