Character Analysis: Lazy Lawrence

Lazy Lawrence The story “Lazy Lawrence” is about a young boy, Jem, which lives with his mother and his mother cannot afford the rent. So in order for the rent to get paid, she was going to sell their horse, Lightfoot. Jem does not want this to happen so he takes matters into his own hands. He finds work with a mistress and saves every penny he gets to save his horse. When the day comes to sell the horse, Jem wanted to surprise his mother with the money, but then he realized someone stole all the money that he had saved up. The town finds out who stole the money because a man that Jem sold rocks for gave him a “lucky penny” and that man’s wife ended up finding it with the boys who stole all Jem’s money. Lawrence is found with pockets full of money and he tells the town who the other boy was with him. Lazy Lawrence teaches children important life lessons that will help them in the future. The story shows that if children want to get something accomplished, they need to go out and do something about it, they should stay motivated and never give up, and they should keep their head up even in the worst situations. Jem ended up getting the two guineas he needed to give his mother so she could pay the rent and he could keep Lightfoot. He was so proud of himself and could not wait to tell his mother about it. However, the mistress wanted him to wait to tell her so that she could see her reaction. Since Jem waited, someone ended up stealing all his money. When the clue of the lucky penny came into the picture and the woman told him about the two young boys; Jem went out looking. Jem stated, “I’ll run after them.” He was eager to find out who the thieves were, and even more important, he wanted his hard earned money
