This was introduced by the Labour party, who Lewis argues have taken on the idea of ‘social investment in children’ seriously and have realised family forms are changing. The Labour party have introduced a number of laws, attempting to strengthen the family unit. They were mainly concerned on helping the social and economic position of women, for example, marital rape was made illegal in 1991 by the Labour party. The rights of children have also been improved by the labour party due to the children’s act of 1989. New right thinkers however; believe that these laws undermine the traditional male dominance in families, but many believe these new policies for women and children strengthen the family rather than weaken it.

Opinions of marriage, cohabitation and childbearing have changed in numerous amounts of ways in the last 40 years. In the chapter the author discusses how divorce is related to emotional feelings and that its even worse than death because you lose someone you know is alive which is worse from my point of view. Mentioned in the chapter is how the divorce reflects negatively of course on the children and the parents as well. For the parents it’s going through the process of losing their partnership as a husband or a wife and for the kids or children it’s the loss of the intimate relationship of the day to day with their non-residential parent. Which of course resembles for both, the parents and the children, home feeling of belonging. Other than that of course there are different stages of mixed up feelings either anger, conflicts adapting to the new life, sadness and grief.
These social scientists also believe that family definitions are different based on race, generations and the situation at hand. While to other people the family may only consist of the immediate family members (such as parents and siblings), the family unit to some includes their pets or even other members of the extended family. Other people include very close friends as part of the family in general. Therefore, this explains why there is a great dilemma in settling on a single universal definition of family (Baker 2006). The three major social science disciplines include politics, history and economics, and it is from these three disciplines that the social scientists seek to challenge the conventional definition of family in the UK.

As the individual grows up, they find themselves more sensitive to the judgement of those around them. In many cases, interracial relationships could be broken directly due to family opposition; depending on the importance of the families’ judgement in the couples’ life. The society and the law are very closely related to each other. The social world changes every second. These changes occur because of the contrasting views in the minds of the indigenous people. We cannot expect laws that were constituted a decade before to be applicable in the current scenario. Therefore changes in law bring out the positivity and brighter side of social change and shuns the negativity that is still incorporated in our societies, fulfilling the social needs of the people.
