Top A-list session guitarists What is a session musician Most of the music we hear on the radio is recorded by session musicians. Session musicians are essentially "for hire" musicians. They perform with solo artists and bands, but they are not officially part of the group. Session musicians play on recordings, in live shows or both. Although some give-and-take may happen during recording, session musicians usually show up and play what they are asked to play. Versatility is one of the most important skills of session musicians as they may have to perform in a range of different settings. Session musicians are expected to learn parts rapidly and be skilled in both sight-reading and ear training. The best session musicians in the business (most of them located in Los Angeles, New York or Nashville) are in the A-list players. To become one it is fundamental to be a team player, to be an expert on the instrument technically, to have a good attitude and many other attributes that make the A Players different from the B Players.
