However superstitious the Montagnais seemed, they had an intractable notion of right and wrong. The normative values, which derived from the Montagnais’ religion, shaped their social life. These social virtues consisted of peacefulness, patience, hospitality and generosity. It is due to these that despite the lack of a centralized government the Montagnais were able to function as a community and live amicably. The two most important Montagnais values are (1) communication and (2) their relationship with the spirit world. In essence, these were the focus of their philosophical and religious thoughts. The Montagnais considered communication not only vital among human beings, but also among themselves, the animals, and many other-than-human persons. For them, rituals and hunting were essentially acts of communication. Rituals in which they sang songs given to them by spirits were performed as means to communicate and obtain knowledge about the future. For example, as the Montagnais understood it, they communicated with the god in charge of hunting, asking about their game and asking to feed them. If the prayers were successful the animals would hear them and would answer the plea. The hunters, in turn, would generously help their kinsmen and would pay respect to the animals by performing the proper rituals. The Montagnais believed that every object and animal in their environment had its own spirit. They viewed their relationship with the spirits as crucial for survival. Case in point, Montagnais religious orientation to hunting to their mind ensured survival. Although they were experts at killing game, they viewed their relationship with animals as one of love and respect and not in terms of violent conquest over their prey.
