While the master plan to blind the Cyclops was incredibly successful, he did something severely wrong while leaving the island. Not knowing of the consequences that might occur, Odysseus shouted his real name to the Cyclops, which essentially caused him a great deal of trouble afterwards. ”Hear me Poseidon…Grant that Odysseus / Son of Laertes, / May never reach his home on Ithaca. “ (Book 9, 22-25) prays Polyphemus. Thus Poseidon further delays Odysseus’ trip and makes it just that much harder for him to return to Ithaca.
When he misses the deadline, Yvain’s deeds no longer match his words and his integrity is shattered. The consequences of losing his integrity are so great that Yvain is lead to a sort of mental breakdown in the forest. The second major arc of Yvain is about the hero trying to get his integrity back. One of the first encounters that Yvain has after lifting himself out of his melt-down puts him in the same position of upholding an oath to return to the Landuc court before a certain time. Although this time Yvain’s promise is to Lunete instead of Laudine, the fact that he keeps his word is what eventually leads to Yvain becoming whole again.
The Chimera invasion of the United States. On May 15, 1953 the Chimera launch a full-scale invasion of the United States, attacking the country from both the east and west, and overwhelming their defenses. Hale, Malikov, and most of the surviving SRPA soldiers escape from the destruction of their base at SRPA 3 in San Francisco after Hale kills a Chimera sea monster, referred to as a Kraken as the Chimera lay waste to the city. The SRPA units pursue a damaged Chimera battleship to Orick, California, where they manage to board the battleship and destroy it using explosive charges. Following their escape, they are shot down and crash near Twin Falls, Idaho which lies on the Liberty Defense Perimeter.
Allowing his pride to step in, Odysseus fails to acknowledge the help in which he received from Poseidon during the time of the war. This angered Poseidon, god of the sea and causes Odysseus to sail rampaging waters on the way back to his homeland of Ithaca. While sailing with his crew men, Odysseus has yet to surrender himself and apologize. Upon the whole journey he acts on instinct and curiosity doing what he thinks is best, but only runs into obstacles that push him back a step each time. One of these journeys involves a Cyclopes whom Odysseus out smarts, but wasn’t aware of the fact that the Cyclopes, Polyphemus was the son of Poseidon.
We take from this passage that Telemachus is almost ready to be king but patiently and properly acquiesces to his father's judgment. Only Odysseus can string the bow on his first attempt, and he does so with ease, showing that he is the proper mate for Penelope and the only man ready to be king of Ithaca. The Sea The sea itself is a recurring symbol throughout the epic. It is, in effect, the sea of life. It represents a great man's journey through life with all its victories and heartbreaks.
He was just one of the others. On his journey to get home he meets two strange obstacles, Scylla and Charybdis. Scylla is a giant sea monster on the right side and Charybdis is a huge whirlpool on the left. Here he says, “'Is there no way,' said I, 'of escaping Charybdis, and at the same time keeping Scylla off when she is trying to harm my men?” (line 1114-1115) Odysseus is stuck in the middle but then decides to be a brave soul and kill Scylla but in the process he jumped to a branch and held himself there until his stuff came back up from Charybdis. Here we find that not all our heroes will do something heroic.
Odysseus travels to the underworld, or hell as called which no man has ever done and come out alive to find the blind seer and find out how he can defeat Poseidon's obstacles. Another way he showed courage is by leaving his ears uncovered and hearing the siren song after he had himself lashed to the mast of the ship.He also climbs straight up a mountain to save his crew from the witch circe. Odysseus shows courage in the odyssey by not giving up on his crew when times looked like they were at their worst. For example when they were trapped by the Cyclops Odysseus came up with a plan and stayed calm in front of his men. Odysseus and his brave and courageous qualities can all sum up a theme that is occurring in Homers version of The Odyssey which is heroism.
