Philip Larkin and Dannie Abse have very different and contrasting attitudes to relationships. On the whole, Larkin presents the concepts of love and marriage as very superficial and meaningless, whereas Abse appears to be less such nihilistic and more open and positive about such topics. Throughout Wild Oats, Philip Larkin uses various literary techniques, such as imagery, structure and symbolism to convey certain aspects of love and the passing of time. Larkin's poetry often relates to the social and cultural views upon love and marriage in his time. In Wild Oats It explains that a person, over the course of time, comes to realise that his greatest desires of love, are unattainable, and second best things will have to suffice.
An “intruder’s eye” is another way of saying “to look at it from another’s perspective”. To call the other’s perspective intrusive is to say that the thoughts and memories they are seeing or hearing are private and, perhaps, ones that even the owner does not wish to think about. Considering the title “After Making Love”, the poem expresses the belief that love and honesty are two cohesive factors in a relationship. The term “making love” is one of tenderness and compassion. The poet did not say “having sex”, “hooking up” or “screwing”.
The writers of “Valentine and “My last duchess” have very contrasting and different ways of explaining their feelings on love. The structure of the first poem “Valentine” is simply not present. It has a very irregular structure, which symbolises the idea of an unconventional relationship and the opposite of what some may believe to be love. All the stanzas in this poem are different lengths, which means that she is simply speaking as she feels. There is no rhyme pattern that could mean that there is no flow or ease in this relationship.
In Christina Rossetti’s poem “Cousin Kate”, there is a theme of commitment. It is mainly about how one man shows his loyalty towards two women, “Cousin Kate” and the speaker. The lord shows no commitment towards the speaker and uses her for his own sexual pleasure. “He wore me like a silken knot,” in this quote the verb “wore” is comparing the speaker to something that can be used. Also the simile “like a silken knot,” the use of this simile is comparing her to something soft and fragile, therefore there is a theme of possessiveness and this shows that lower class women in the Elizabethan era were easily manipulated by higher class men.
while she's sleeping with lewis she's 'having sex with nick'. When Lewis finds out about lucy's deception, she disregards his feels and in defence says " its not as if we were maried or something." This proves the concept in " cosi fan tutte' is right. It's also right in saying that " woman's constancy is like the arabian pheonix, everyon swears it exists, but no one has seen it". The simile used in this quote emphasises the lack of fidelity within both texts.
Let me count the ways!” She starts the poem with how suggesting that we can say that we love someone but we can never define the nature of true love. Browning then says “let me count the ways” which also suggest that love isn’t quantifiable so this imperative seems unlikely. This is just like in the 8th line of Sonnet 116 when Shakespeare says “whose worth is unknown” also suggesting that we will never know why we love someone so much. Both poets start by making inviting the reader to reflect on the nature of love.
Love and Devotion in Cyrano de Bergerac and The Awakening Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand was a play about adult intimacy but not sex, where The Awakening by Kate Chopin was a novel about rebelling against love, and running out on your family. While Cyrano and Roxanne may not have had “true” love Cyrano devoted his life to her, whereas Edna simply had petty infatuation that hopped from subject to subject. True intimacy is much better than superficial, love-at-first-sight, pretty-face infatuation, because with age, that love disappears along with that pretty young face. Infatuation is a volatile elixir. Just as physical beauty is a temporary attribute.
Do you agree or disagree with this message? Explain. I agree because love is something that you can't quantify Are there any other reasonable ways to interpret this poem? Not that I can see. I Do Not Love Thee Publication: What kind of magazine or other publication would be the best place for this
Many people view infatuated love as irresponsible, immature and blind love built solely on unreasonable passion, which could simply stem from a sexual attraction. Empty love occurs when a person is solely looking for a commitment with no interest in intimacy or passion. This could simply be a result of not wanting to be alone in the world. It is built on the promise that the couple will maintain their relationship in the future. Fatuous love is caused from the combination of passion and commitment, without a sense of intimacy.
Annabel Lee’s lover viewed her as a maiden writing,”…a maiden….than to love and be loved by me.” Lines five and six symbolize this unreal love that he and Virginia had. Labeling her a maiden, fits right into this imaginary kingdom by the sea. Furthermore, Poe writes in line 11,” a love the winged seraphs of Heaven coveted her and me,” and in lines 30-33, “…The angels in Heaven above…can ever dissever my soul of the beautiful Annabel Lee.” These lines symbolizes that even the angels, although they represent love, joy, and peace, are jealous about Poe and Virginia’s love for each other. Angels experience the greatest and true love by God in Heaven, and therefore have no need to envy human love. Following this
