Two very good friends, Matt Tucker and Bill Lynch after having tasted much success by building an open platform discussion forum called “CoolServlets” decided to incorporate their company called Jive Software in February, 2001. The entrepreneurial works of Matt and Bill had started in a one-room shop with CoolServlets however, the product was so successful that they received an offer to partner with Sun Microsystem that encouraged them to start a formal well defined company. The services of CoolServlets which was open source till now became a paid product after partnering with Sun Microsystem. Prior to getting incorporated, Matt and Bill needn’t worry about the types of users neither was the need to define and target a particular segment. They carried on with the same method of working even after getting incorporated.…show more content…
However, the absence of any particular strategy with respect to target customers was a big flaw in their operating model. They created various versions of the same product selling them to different clients but with no sales strategy or long term planning. The first planned product that took shape after formation of Jive Software was “Clearspace” which intended to offer one stop solution to all blogs, wiki pages etc. but the development team of Jive missed the deadline for product development by 6 months and on top of that, they didn’t review their plans and completely ignored what the competitors were doing.
