Jane Eyer opens with Jane being wrapped I her own thoughts. We discover that she is living in a house where she is not welcomed. The other kids Eliza, John, and Georgina are kept at a distance by their abrasive mother Mrs. Reed. Mrs. Reed seems to be threatened by Janes level of maturity. It’s almost like she finds it disrespectful. So to punish her Jane is constantly ostracized not only by her but by her children as well. Janes only form of solace seems to be when she can slip away in a corner and read that’s where she can get lost in her imagination. However that comfort was soon disrupted by John who seems to now be the head of the house hold even though he is only four years older than Jane finds her. Shockingly we find that at just fourteen years old John is verbally and physically abusive to everyone in the house especially Jane. Up until this point it seems Jane has habitually taken this abuse from not only the Reed family but from the help as well them however now it seems as though Jane has reached her boiling point. That morning she can’t take a bath because the water they collected froze over night but that is not surprising to Jane due to the fact that she was shivering all night because of the old loose windows. On her second day Jane finds herself thrown into the routine of things and is playing catch-up for most of the day. While doing some class work Jane spots Miss Scatcherd nitpicking at Helen and is dumfounded not only at Helens intelligence but also her ability to endure Miss Scatcherd’s abuse. At one point Helen is struck with a bunch of twigs and does not even seem fazed but Jane later sees her wiping her tears.When Jane goes to comfort Helen later that day Helen tells her that being beaten is a small price she is willing to pay for in order to obtain an education and she believed that it is her and Janes religious duty to bear these things and respond with love. Jane has trouble understanding this concept. In the back of Janes head she thinks that Helen is probably right but she ignores that thought at the moment because then that means that she should love the Reeds and that is something she can’t bring herself to do. When Jane tells Helen about Mrs. Reed and why she can’t possibly forgive her Helen tells he that life is too short to spend it holding grudges over people and things you can’t change nor
