Both Italy and Japan have very similar geographical features. These countries do have a lot in common when it comes to their geographical features, yet they use these geographical advantages and disadvantages to create very different cultures. Without these geographical features, Italy and Japan might have been very different. These features shaped these countries into what they are today. Both of these countries have mountains and volcanoes that take up the majority of their land. The mountains sometimes make it difficult to farm. In fact, only 15% of the land in Japan is fertile and in Italy, only 35.5% of land is fertile. Mountains also provide a natural barrier between different cities in these countries, as well as a natural barrier against other countries, like the Alps do for Italy. The volcanoes can be dangerous as well. Mt. Etna in Sicily, Italy is considered one of the most active volcanoes on earth. While Japan has over 100 active volcanoes, some that are very dangerous. These volcanoes are caused by tectonic plates that make up part of the earths surface. Both of these countries are near the gaps, where magma can seep through, causing a volcano. These tectonic plates can cau`se earthquakes as well. Japan is located at the junction of 4 tectonic plates - the Pacific, Philippine, Eurasian and North American plates, making Japan the place that is known for earthquakes. Both Japan as well as Italy have water surrounding them either on most or all sides. Japan has used it to their advantage, making sushi one of their cultural foods. While Italy does use seafood, it is not known specifically for using the seas around them to find food. Both of these countries use the water surrounding them as a natural barrier.
