Among the characters in the story, some were rescued in danger by people who were not ordinarilly close to them. Some in trouble were protected by people who they were in a cold war with. Some discovered their everyday friend’s betrayal at the moment of truth. Hence it is in times of crisis that we are able to discover who our enemies are and who our friends are. Hart, the son of a Pearling Master, sensed his heartfelt friendship with Zeke when Zeke devoted himself to keep him alive after the shipwreck. Zeke is a japanese diver who didn’t talk much and seldom communicated with Hart. It was to Hart’s surprise being saved by a Zeke, who were not on intimate terms him. But the truth was that this slim, sunbrowned man had layed down his precious life for Hart’s. Hart has finally realiased how wholehearted was his friend, Zeke, at the time of crisis. Mitsy and Sadako also realised Michael and Hart’s genuiness when they were in crisis. As victims of the racism caused by war, this Japanese mum and daughter were bullied by the locals and nearly ended up being homeless. Although Mitsy and Sadako had almost “cut Michael and Hart out of her life” previously due to the war, it was Michael and Hart who offered a home as sanctuary to them. When Mitsy was about to reject their kind offer, Sadako immidiately adjusted her attitude towards them by telling her Michael and Hart was their true friends. Therefore, Mitsy and Sadako discovered whom their friends were when they were down on their luck.
