Harper Lee shows the racist social values that most of the inhabitants of Maycomb County follow are one of the factors that cause Atticus Finch’s defense to fail. In Maycomb, hating black people is a never-ending trend. Even though almost everyone follows it, Atticus does not. He is one of the only characters in the novel that has good social values and does not judge one by his or her skin colour. Although he has a feeling that he is not going to win the case, he still does the right thing by
With power in their hands, they are able to do whatever they want against the law without being punished. David was shocked when he discovered that both of his father and grandfather were in conspiracy of knowledge about Frank raping Indian girls, but just indulged it. Before reaching the central climax, David already finds
The barber could have swept away that manslayer with the tilt of a blade and saved the lives of many like him. The rebels would have rejoiced and named him their salvation for killing the man who did just the same to so many of them. Rebels for miles around could live without fear of one day suddenly being publicly hanged in front of a child’s school by Torres and his men. The barber had the chance to be the hero of many but instead chose to
Most tribes do not have the money and other resources for officers, prosecutors, courts, detention facilities, and rehabilitation facilities. Most reservations rely on the Bureau of Indian Affairs to assign officers to their reservations. The lack of resources makes good policing difficult, and also hinders prosecution. The Violence Against Women Act of 1994 was passed to protect Native American women and provides money toward investigation and prosecution of violent crimes against women. The high crime rate is due to a lack of adequate
From racial profiling to other issues such as affirmative action, police brutality against minorities and the history of slavery and the rising resentment against immigrants.” (Anup Shah 1998) I think this really does suit racism in the United States. Yes it has come a long way from what it used to be like but we still have problems just like this all over the world. Way back in the day American people didn’t have much racism towards them but Americans were very racist towards everyone who was not American. They had all sorts of racial groups such as the Ku Klux Klan, save our state, and gay groups. These groups of hate have died down over the years but there are still a few out
Okonkwo plays a big role in the story because of how his character fits on Things Fall Apart. It is crazy how he treat people differently, he will beat up his wives and children yet he has a soft spot towards Ekwefi and Enzima. This makes me think that Okonkwo choose his moments to act manly or choose people to beat up, and he is always more aggressive to his family members than outside people. Okonkwo showed that he has no sympathy when he killed Ikemefuna, who helped Okonkwo a lot in his life, and yet he decided to kill him even though Ikemefuna was really close to him. Okonkwo does not care if you are part of his life or not, if you do not satisfy him he will do damage to you.
The black man is convicted of raping the white man's daughter, and even though all charges are faced towards the white man lying, the black man is proven guilty. Atticus Finch receives a lot of hatred for his decision to face someone who is unlike him, and his children also hear a lot from the citizens of their town. The citizens of his town always thought of him as someone who they could look up to, but when he defies their initial trust with something that they could not even imagine, they start degrading him. In this way, the public expects too much from their public figures. It is also evident that public figures are faced with too many expectations in everyday life.
In the assertion ‘all people are good, but it’s the external forces of society that make a man evil’ I immediately think of the ‘Ballad of Joe Meek’. Joe Meek was generally a ‘good’ person before his encounter with the police officers. He had good intentions by telling the police officers they were wrong for putting their hands on the young woman, but the blatant disrespect the police officers showed him changed his outlook. The actions taken by the police officers stand as the external forces or catalysts for Joe Meek’s violent rampage. Back in our ‘Rise of Man’ unit, many people in the class agreed that the quality that makes man is the ability to be shaped by our experiences.
When Keller says “what the hell did I work for? That’s only for you Chris, the whole shootin’ match is for you,” this shows the reader very clearly that he feels it his duty to provide for his son. All my sons is a very tragic play. It shows how a man can sacrifice his morals, responsibility and the truth to provide for his family so that they can live a perfectly plentiful life. This struggle for wealth and material goods involves Keller committing an awful crime due to his greed,
I think that the audience is very naive for feeling sympathy for Tsotsi because he is a criminal that was involved with the murder of two people; Butcher and Zachariah. If anyone were to commit such crimes in reality no one would hesitate to send the person to prison but because of clever filming that made Tsotsi look innocent at the end of the film the audience feel sorry for him. Gavin Hood achieves this by shooting high angles on Tsotsi which make him look small and vulnerable. Along with good acting by Presley Chweneyagae(Tsotsi) , the director effectively wins the hearts of the audience and evokes sympathy for Tsotsi when he is arrested. In a matter of days, the film shows the dramatic change of Tsotsi’s character.
