Are the characters in Montana 1948 naturally corrupt or moral or are they shaped by the environment they live in? The characters in Montana 1948 are not naturally corrupted; they are shaped by the environment they live in. Montana 1948, written by Larry Watson is coming of age narrative and moral drama novel. The story is told in flashback, beginning in the present and returning to the summer of 1948. As well as Hayden family being the law, there were fewer rights back then and racism was a common problem. The people in Montana were corrupted by the environment they live in. The Hayden family was the law and had full power and respect of the people they lived with. The Hayden family was the sheriff of their town. They were respected so much by their community that if someone from their family did a simple crime, their reputation would be ruined. They had full power of their people especially the Indians. Frank molested and raped the Indian women because of the power he had against them, which made him see himself as a superior and take advantage of others. Julian, being the head of his family, he feels that he has power to decide what justice is and what is not. He does not hesitate in choosing between justice and his favorite son, he gets really mad when Wes put Frank to justice for his crimes and uses his power to free him. The power and respect for Hayden made them the law and shaped their community. In 1948, there were fewer rights, mainly because of the war that happened in few years back. The town was still recovering from the war and some of the rights were wiped out. The Indian people had less right than the white people. The whites dominated the Indians. The Indians were forced to live in small poor reservations and they had limited jobs. They were not allowed to be in any form of authority.
