Isolation is one of the themes that Sherman Alexie is trying to get across to the audience. Junior, the protagonist and narrator was born with water in his brain. This caused him to have multiple physical impairments. Junior also has a curiosity that could not be matched by any of his peers. His curiosity makes him an outcast within his own people. Both his physical impairments and his curiosity drive him to isolate himself from others due to the way he is treated because of them. When Junior was six months old he had a surgery because he was born with water in his brain, he was not supposed to survive the surgery.
