Honor is a source of credit or distinction, and is inherent to reverence, dignity, reputation, good name, and having a good understanding as to what is and is not morally correct. The key part to honor is having respect for others and for yourself; you must have both because having one without the other is the same thing as having neither. I believe strongly that reputation is difficult to gain and even more so to maintain. In order to keep one’s set level of honor, one must maintain a standard of excellence. It takes only one wrong decison to cause a person to lose their honor.
Perhaps more so than Emotivists, Prescriptivists see ethical language as fairly meaningful. They believe that the terms used are able to create absolute rules that everyone ought to follow. It would seem that ethical language is seen by many as very meaningful, although for varying reasons. However agent centred theories such as Virtue Ethics would argue that our main focus of morality should be on becoming as virtuous as possible, rather than deciding what is meant by ethical language. Therefore it would seem that perhaps morality should be more focussed on individuals’ actions rather then defining what is meant by ‘good’ and
He and his wife both know that he might die in battle. His wife even prophesies in book 22 after Hektor’s death, that their son will have to beg for food. Hektor, well aware of the risks, says to his wife, “these many things beset my mind no less than yours. But I should die of shame before our Trojan men and noble women if like a coward I avoided battle, nor am I moved to” (VI 513-517). Hektor chooses to risk his life and the well-being of his family in order to obtain glory over the Akhaians.
Ayn Rand’s Anthem I do not agree or disagree with Rand’s doctrine of ethical egoism. I believe that we should live in a society that is a combination of both, ethical egoism and ethical altruism. In my opinion Rand’s doctrine of ethical egoism seems to be self-centered, but on the other hand the doctrine of ethical altruism is not all that appealing in my eyes. If I have to work, I would rather work to benefit myself, and to fit my interests. At the same to time I think it right to help the less fortunate and to recognize every person as they are, a human being.
With firefights, life and death situations, and the mourning of their fellow soldiers, Restrepo showed that when it comes to war, even when we win, everyone still loses. At war, winning is the main goal. Defeating the opposing side and fighting for your country is what soldiers sign up to do. However, even when the soldiers accomplish their goal, and survive the war, a part of them still dies. They will never be the same person they were before they left for war because what they see, experience and feel will change them no matter how tough they are.
Individualism is not all bad. Having a deep sense of pride in oneself and seeking to distance oneself from a controlling society or culture is understandable; however, there is the option of seeking out another community that would be very accepting of others who want to find connections and a safe “family.” Individuality separates and nationality combines. Nationality seeks to create a community and a family for one who needs that sort of backbone in their life. Individuals don’t necessarily have to seek dissent so that they could be rid of the controlling minds of society; moreover, they can seek to find refuge in another community that would provide the deep connection that most humans need. Community can be helpful since most people need others in order to succeed or get to a certain point in
While someone else may hold a different ethical viewpoint, I have found, upon taking the Ethical Lens Inventory, my own personal ethical viewpoint to lie right in the middle of the Results Lens and the Reputation Lens. The things I value the most are personal independence and equality between all people. Also, I believe in overcoming obstacles with reasoning and courage. One of my greatest strengths is having compassion, and nothing is more important to me than that specific trait. However, where there is strength, there is also weakness.
You feel bad for them, or you just want it to get better so you allow them to end their life which to some is believed to be immoral. I believe that Care Ethics would answer back by saying that by allowing their emotions to guide them they are doing what is moral and what is best for the one they love. They could also argue that their emotions allowing someone to take their own life is giving that person the autonomy they deserve. By caring about them you want them to have all of the rights they should have, and you don’t want to see them suffer so you let them
The nature of this heroic code was portrayed through the act of giving gifts to symbolize personal relationships and worth, avenging loved ones instead of grieving over them, and showing generosity to demonstrate appreciation (Shuger, Lecture). The text also illustrates this ideal of dying young and gloriously rather than wasting away due to old age. The mission of a hero during this day and age was quite simple. Defend the kingdom by any means necessary, stay loyal to one’s kinsmen, and protect one’s individual reputation by being a brave warrior no matter what that entails. Cowardice was unacceptable.
By "patriotism" I mean devotion to a particular place and a particular way of life, which one believes to be the best in the world but has no wish to force on other people. Patriotism is of its nature defensive, both militarily and culturally. Nationalism, on the other hand, is inseperable from the desire for power. The
