3. How will the concentration of sucrose in water affect the amount of water that diffuses into or out of the potato cells and thereby change the mass of the potato cells? Hypotheses: 1. If the solution inside the dialysis tubing is hypertonic to the water in the beaker, then the glucose will diffuse out of the bag, and the water will diffuse into the bag, however the starch will remain in the bag. This will occur because the water and glucose are small enough to diffuse out of the pores in the dialysis bag, but the starch molecules are too large to fit through 2.
Review the effect of pH on enzyme function. Students should understand that enzymes function best at specific pH levels (which vary depending on the enzyme). Non-optimal pH levels can affect the shape of the enzyme, thereby decreasing its effectiveness as a catalyst. Extreme pH levels can permanently denature the enzyme protein, whereas less extreme pH conditions may only temporarily alter . Lactase is effective at pH 2 – 7 (including dH2O) and therefore breaks down the lactose sugar in milk into glucose and galactose.
This assignment will evaluate the importance of homeostasis in maintaining a healthy functioning of the body. If homeostasis did not work properly in the body then there are many problems that could arise. Diabetes is one of those problems: Diabetes Diabetes is “a permanent change in your internal chemistry that results having too much glucose in your blood” because the body cannot use it properly. (Rudy, 1999, Page 10) Glucose comes from digesting carbohydrates and is also produced by the liver, carbohydrate comes from many different kinds of foods and drink, such as Wholegrain cereals such as Weetabix and Shredded Wheat, Brown rice, Pasta and Potatoes. “Diabetes can be tackled in different ways- by insulin and diet” (Rudy, 1999, page 19) Diet, when someone had diabetes it is best for their health to cut right down on the unhealthy foods, and stick to the health foods, this is due to the effectiveness of the medication you are on.
Plain baked potatoes instead of French fries and high-fibre, fortified cereals instead of high-fat doughnuts would be healthier. Small changes like these could improve her diet dramatically. “Try not drinking so much soft drink,” Mary suggests. “Bottled water or a glass of milk would be much more beneficial.” “I can’t drink milk!” Clara says. “Last time I had a glass of milk, my stomach hurt for hours.
Lake of the Ozarks, Mo. — How you feel can be directly related to what you eat. If you frequently feel stressed out, you know how tempting it is to grab a comfort food, like ice cream, cookies or even mashed potatoes or macaroni and cheese, to make yourself feel better. These are simple carbs that actually can aggravate your stress. Instead, try some changes to your diet to include some of these stress-reducing foods.
Sugar is not good for you because it turns into energy that can be stored as fat. That can be unhealthy for your body. Also you need food with nutrients and vitamins like oranges and peaches. Fruits and vegetables you get from home are fresher so they have more of the vitamins in them. Another reason to eat home lunch is that it gives you the ability to select which food you will consume.
If there is more enzyme then substrate then when the substrate is finished the enzyme has nothing to catalyze and so the reaction rate slows down. In this experiment catechol oxidase from potato was used as the enzyme and catechol as the substrate. To find the rate of reaction, the melanoid pigment from solanum tubersome (potato juice) was measured by the intensity of its color. The color was measured using a spectrophotometer at an absorbance of 420 nm. The results showed that as the enzyme had more time to react, the greater the color intensity was and the greater the reaction rate.
“Fibers that cannot be digested by bacteria in the large intestines are called insoluble fibers because they do not dissolve in water.” (Grosvenor & Smolin, 2006) High fiber diets can produce many benefits, including higher nutrient absorption levels, and better waste output. Diets that tend to lack in fiber or are high in insoluble fiber tend to cause gastrointestinal irritation and constipation. People that experience these symptoms should consider reviewing their fiber sources, and water consumption
However, using the juicing method would require a large amount of vegetables to obtain the desired 12 ounces. It would also require more effort to chew the amount of vegetables that would be equivalent to 12 ounces of vegetable juice. According to Hellawell (n.d) “Apart from preserving intact the vital nutrients contained in fresh fruit and vegetables, juicing also gives an additional advantage over simply eating raw produce. It allows us to obtain the nutrition from raw produce in greater quantities than chewing can achieve.” While looking for articles I came across one on how marijuana plays a role in juicing. Studies have shown that juicing marijuana in raw form can help normalize functions of our bodies.
Instead, an easier alternative would be to educate people on the dangers and results of eating unhealthily as well as ensuring the process of making processed foods cost more than the healthier alternatives such as fruit and 100% juice products. The fact that lots of the unhealthy food that the population consumes simply because it is affordable, is one of the main causes for the lack of public health. Government involvement shouldn’t be necessary, but if it is, a plan should be instituted that would allow healthier options to be cheaper than the unhealthier alternatives that are more common. Also, the FDA should take a deeper look into the long lasting affects of the chemicals found in common foods such as soda
