Investigating a factor that affects the movement of water of dissolved substances into and out of plant cells The experiment I decided to do was to find out how the concentration of the sugar in water affects the weight of a potato. I predict, that as concentration increases, the weight and length of the potato chip will decrease. My reasoning behind this, is that the higher the concentration of sugar in a solution, the lower the concentration of water. When the potato chip is put into the solution, it will, by osmosis lose some of its water, and the water will diffuse into the solution, causing the potato chip to lose water, thus decreasing in weight and length. Osmosis is the flow of a solvent by diffusion through a semi permeable membrane from a less concentrated solution to a more concentrated one, until the concentrations are equalized. I can quantify my prediction by saying that, as concentration doubles the decrease in length will also double until a limiting factor operates. There were many factors I had to make sure where controlled in this experiment. One is that I had to make sure the weighing equipment used was the same. This is because on different weighing machines, different weights can be shown. Doing this could had led to inaccuracies in my results. I also had to stop the process of osmosis being affected by anything other than the concentration of the solution. I had to make sure the temperature was the same as this affects the speed of the reaction. The surface area of the potato chip has also got to be the same as the bigger the surface area the more water can get in and out of the potato. Firstly, I had to gather my equipment. I decided to use the cork borer as this; I felt, was more accurate than the potato chipper. I believe this because the chippers gaps were fairly uneven and they did not look like each square was the same size.
