A Comparison between Inuit and Assiniboine Do you know Frist Nations? Canada is the most multi-cultural and immigrants of country in the world, but less than 500 years ago, the only people living in Canada were Frist Nations people. There were many different groups, such as Inuit, Huron, Central Coast Salish, and Assiniboine. Although Inuit and Assiniboine are both First Nations in Canada, they have a lot of differences in terms of their food, social and political life, and present-day status. One obvious difference is food. For the Inuit, the most important thing is the people adapt to their lifestyle in the coldest and most unforgiving environments. In Inuit culture, family groups were the most important social unit, and they usually lived in family groups of around 5-6 people. Marriage is important for the Inuit people. Meanwhile, there is an obvious division of labour in a marriage, such as men’s major built the houses, hunted, and fished; women cooked, made clothing, and looked after the children. During the winter, families would live and hunt together with 6-10 other families in larger groups, but they would separate follow the hunt in the summer. However they have not real leader or Chief. On the other hands, there would be a band chief who was supported if the band could catch enough game for food, and deal with the outsiders in the Assiniboine. Generally the leader is wise and patient or shows other qualities of leadership. According to Getty “Leadership was earned by superior hunting skills, through personal achievement in battle or attacks on an enemy, and by showing kindness and generosity to others” (par.9). Although the Inuit live modern way of life, many Inuit communities face significant challenges, such as living in some of the most crowded conditions in Canada. A 2006 survey said that “in the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Québec, and Labrador, more than 15 000 Inuit were living in over-crowded conditions, and were the most likely to live in households with more than one family”(Aodla, par.10). Not only the Inuit young lack of access to healthcare, but also education for the Inuit is still problematic. For example, each village has its own school. Yet the dropout rate is still high among their youth. On the contrary, the Assiniboine communities enjoy many community services which include a day school, community complex, fire hall, warehouse and a water treatment plant and so on. Like some Assiniboine reserves operates a golf course and multiservice food store and they speak English more widely than the native language. To sum up, the people of the Canadian Arctic are known as the Inuit compare with the original plains people of the Assiniboine. Both Inuit and Assiniboine have its own style of their food, social and political lifestyle, and present-day status. They are good at hunting and fishing, but the main source of food is different.
