Film Paper 1: “Cree Hunters” Society consists of people bound with the same beliefs and social norms that differentiate them from people outside of the society. The Cree of Mistassini is a society consisting of people who are defined by their nomadic lifestyles and skillful hunting. In 1974, the lives of three Cree families are chronicled in a documentary, “Cree Hunters of Mistassini”. The film explores the beliefs and ecological principles that they hold, and it shows their life as hunters at James Bay and Ungava Bay. Cree people who are usually reclusive about their way of life agreed to be documented in the film as they are worried about the shrinking number in their people who are still retaining their traditional way of life.
Canadian Regionalism: From Sea to Sea? Each region of Canada has always had unique needs and interests. These have affected everything from choices of political leaders right down to whether or not to remain as part of the nation of Canada. • THE NORTH – Fending for themselves o Yukon, NWT, Nunavut o Communities are isolated, health care difficult to come by, and transportation unreliable o Nunavut – created in 1999 most of it’s population are Inuit ▪ Allowed for unique government (consensus and no political parties) o Poverty and hunger – 40% of Inuit children experienced hunger in 2006 ▪ Many families able and willing to rely on “country food” o Climate Change – hunting routes changed
The struggles to survive through the cold harsh winter, this was a huge challenge. Canada was a brutal place back then, to the point that one would even take another’s life to save their own. The laws that governed aboriginal society were strict and included many rites and observances. Also food choices were, according to Maher (1999,p. 230), ‘intertwined with many aspects of aboriginal life such as the land, kinship obligations and religion’. Many laws are taboos against eating certain meats eg young boys commencing initiation or during
People’s living quarters, surroundings and community have a great degree of impact on their self-worth. American Indians now control a meagre 0.48% of the land they did before white settlers arrived. Because of this, overcrowding is a real problem on Native American reservations, indeed over 30% of American Indian families live in overcrowded housing and 18% are severely overcrowded with 25-30 individuals sharing a single home. These rates are over six times the national average. As well as this, one in five homes on reservations lack complete plumbing facilities and less than 50% are connected to the public sewer system (http://www.walkingshield.org/the_need.shtml), startling statistics.
It can be estimated that less than half of Canada’s aboriginal people live on reserves. In the arctic, the inuit are the majority because the harsh winter climate has discouraged European settlement. In not only Canada, but throughout the world, Aboriginals have arranged themselves into "tribes", each tribe having there own territory, language, and culture.

However, the presence of foreign students has led to the destruction of educational institutions. The first reason for the deterioration of the educational system is that students cannot focus on important subjects.

From 2007 to 2010, the national unemployment rate for American Indians increased 7.7% to 15.2%. The largest employers for American Indians are Tribal and Federal governments on the reservations. Many are forced to look for work outside of the reservation and receive lower wages that leave them failing to meet their basic needs of food, shelter, and clothing. “A major cause of poverty in Native American communities is the persistent lack of opportunity. Only 36 percent of males in high-poverty Native American communities have full-time, year-round employment.” (Rodgers, 2013) The overall percentage of American Indians living below the federal poverty line is 28.2% (2008, American Indians Census Facts).
