The Mennonites, Amish and Quakers kept close knit communities as well, but there was a slight difference in Quebec. What is the French question in Quebec and how did it affect their education? Is this really a diversity issue? I contend that it is. French Canadians were absolutely sure they would lose their language and culture if they ventured into mainstream Canada, so many French Canadians remained employed in the traditional jobs of agriculture, mining and forestry.
In most cases, the Native Americans are portrayed as acting in a “foul, pagan way.” The very first vantage point comes from the narrator of the movie, Little Big Man, and his stance on the nature of the Native Americans varies throughout the movie. While he is at first fearful of all Native Americans, he later begins to distinguish between varying tribes and gain a great deal of respect for their lifestyle. It is often the ignorance of the characters in this movie that causes them to fear the Native Americans, and the people that fear or dislike them are usually groundless in their reasoning. There are many challenges that deter the narrator from easily transitioning from a negative opinion on natives to the exact opposite. After his family was slaughtered by natives, the narrator had to rebuild trust and learn not to generalize and group all natives together as violent, malicious people.
The Spirit Ancestor was symbolized by animal, bird or fish that was the clan totem. The totem was painted or carved on the sacred objects. These stones and boards with their secret and sacred designs represented the continuing life force of the Spirit Ancestors and the creative power of the Dreaming. The Elders kept them in secret places. It meant death and endangered land and people for the uninitiated to see them.
My most favorite memory was when it was a runt season in the middle of November, and a little buck ran into my stand chasing a doe. When wanting to hunt, there are lots of requirements and restrictions to go by. Hunting requires patience, by sitting in a position for so long waiting for that animal you’re waiting for to come
So by the time they actually shoot something, the hunter has developed a deep connection to the species and to the land. Some considered themselves an environmentalist before they started hunting. But until they are out there, can they understand the traditional ways of their ancestors. Hunting in today's culture, still provides nutrition for those that still believe in living off the land, why? Because, it has little to no environmental footprint, no antibiotics, artificial hormones, pesticides, herbicides, or unnatural feeds were used in raising this meat.
As he grows up, he distances himself further and further away from his Bengali family. It is clear early on that Gogol feels the need to be accepted, fit in, and does not like being different than his peers. This dynamic doesn’t work for the family in many instances. Ashima and Ashoke were adults with established culture and identity as Bengalis; therefore they are foreign, misunderstood, and strange to Americans. This embarrasses Gogol so he is constantly trying to compensate by blending in with Americans.
They often involved the outlawing of traditional social systems, values and spiritual beliefs. Whether these policies were misguided humanitarianism or malicious attempts to wipe out the Indian way of life, the effects of these policies were devastating. The undermining of beliefs and ceremonies meant that Aboriginal people could not practice many of the healing methods that had been so important to their well-being. Being Indian was often times illegal, frowned upon, but worst of all, something to be ashamed of. Being part of mainstream Canadian society was something to aspire to.
The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) is trying to get many sports teams to change from using Indians as they’re Mascot. Many people find this offensive since they portray them as nice friendly characters. "We're not so happy about the fact that they didn't make the decision to ban the use of Indian team names and mascots," Says Anishinabe-Ojibwe Nation(Source E) in Minnesota. As stated in the quote the chief is not pleased with the Indian name being disgraced and dishonored. They problem with this is that most teams and clubhouses don’t care about the Native Americans.
This was seen as very bad news for the Catholics. Since the RUC always stuck with its traditional pro-unionist role, the police force was feared and hated by the Catholic people. This of course, angered many Catholics as they felt that they could not rely on such a corrupt service that basically hated them, but despite this, was supposed to be there to protect them. During the 1960’s, Catholic employment tended towards the lower end of the job market and they were employed mainly in unskilled and lower paying jobs such as, factory workers and clothing manufacturers. Of course, the Protestants on the other hand had relatively higher paying jobs for example, engineering and shipbuilding.
Due to the lack of communication skills and being a social outcast, she is faced with a hard decision if she should relocate to Vancouver to be with fellow Chinese immigrants or to continue to run her late husband’s coffee shop. Paul Yee vividly portrays her social surroundings and how difficult life is for immigrants via series of flashbacks in the life of the protagonist. Even tough the times have changed since the 1950s; adjustment for new immigrants is just as excruciating. If I was to describe Canada in one sentence, it would be ‘open land of opportunity for newcomers’. The foundation of this great nation was built by immigrants.
