International students are those who travel to a country different from their own for studying in foreign educational institutions. Canada is a popular study destination with students from all around the world. Foreign students bring with them a distinct culture, knowledge, unique skills and personality. After graduation, most of them will begin their careers in Canada. I’m also an international student in Canada. A job search for any student requires substantial time and effort, as an international student we will face a few more hurdles to clear than our Canada counterparts. Although every country has been exposed to Canada culture, we will be less familiar with Canada business culture and recruiting practices than domestic students. So we need to tap into the knowledge of our Canada classmates and be a sponge for information from TV, movies, newspapers and colleagues. And we don’t speak English as a native language; we are at a distinct disadvantage communicating with recruiters. To overcome it, we should consciously make an effort to talk with Canadians. But being international is not all doom and gloom. In fact, our foreign background can be leveraged very effectively to set us apart and differentiate you from our peers. We have two main selling points: Bilingual abilities and Cultural background. Our experiences abroad may enhance marketability and increase our likelihood of employment through: Increased awareness and higher self-esteem, Ability to solve problems in unfamiliar situations, Strengthening foreign language and cross-cultural communication skills and Ability to think critically from a global perspective. International students should be able to demonstrate why hiring us is more to their advantage than their disadvantage.
