Reflection on Liebeck and Skemp Reflecting on my readings of Skemp, R. (1989) Mathematics in the Primary School, and Liebeck, P. (1990) How Children Learn Mathematics. I have reflected on the importance of Mathematics in the world around us as human beings and how it is taught within our schools. Skemp asks the question ‘Why is Mathematics still a problem subject for so many?’ One of the theories put forward is that the teaching of Maths is seen as satisfying teachers and adults by children achieving ticks for their mathematical work passing exams without fully understanding the subject. However children are achieving this through rote, a form of habitual learning. Intelligent learning is adaptable achieving the answer by way of different procedures or routes (building up knowledge) in understanding how to figure out the problem by a variety of schemas.
However, Atticus encouraged reading and prompted his daughter to read every night with him. In the 1930’s only someone truly intelligent would have promoted reading to their kids at such a young age, and that’s another reason why Atticus is a genius. Finally, Atticus is also incredibly smart because while most of his peers are shooting at targets or playing football, Atticus would rather read. Although he was already a successful lawyer, he still worked hard to improve his knowledge through reading. In a town where reading was shunned, Atticus always promoted it.
This assignment was designed to interview a person near my age and discuss their personality, similar characteristics, attitude and goals. I selected a colleague name Alice Newton. I have only known Ms. Newton for a short period of time and I consider her to be a very smart, aspiring and an extremely intelligent woman. In my opinion I believe our views on life are comparable. Once I interview Ms. Newton the questions based on the outline given and the questions that were asked in class, I will determine if my views are correct.

In school I believe that I learned a little slower than others, but I always manage to achieve good grades. One of the most exciting assignments during this class was to take a learning style assessment test to see which of the three learning styles I learn best from. From an early age others see that she is exceptional. “When we entered the first grade, we were examined by... Miss Leep, who announced that we were gifted: Leah, on account of her nonchalant dazzling scores on reading-comprehension tests...”(56). Leah is able to quickly learn how things work and how to use them. Kingsolver depicts Leah as someone who is able to learn quickly, however, Leah only learns what intrigues her. Leah uses her knowledge of mathematics to teach in Anatole’s school.
Franklin ended up as an apprentice to his half-brother, James who was a printer. He was supposed to work for him until he was twenty one years of age. Franklin liked his job, had access to better books and while learning the trade of his brother; Franklin worked and improved his writing as time progressed. Going to grammar school, and reading every article or book he could find led Franklin to his occupation. Franklin cannot even distinguish a day that he didn’t know how to read.
Suddenly Lee had a best seller. Fans wanted more but To Kill a Mockingbird was Lee’s only published novel. The last work under Lee’s name was an essay, over 20 years old now, that she read at the Alabama Heritage Festival in 1983. She has received many awards for her book. Bookstores say that High School and Middle School students account for most of the sales of the novel.

Jamison Mullen Ms.Cramer Final reflective essay 5/24/12 It’s been a long hard year for all the students that took English 10. It’s good that people take English because it affects the way we talk, live, and function in day to day life. I can say personally English helped my writing tremendously. I could hardly write essays due to my bad grammar and the inability to punctuate my words and sentences I’ve come a long way. It was worth every question and worksheet to where I am now.
