“No man is above the law and no man below it.” This is an excellent quote by Theodore Roosevelt, and is self-explanatory. Time stands witness to the difference in the practices between what is written in the codes of law and what happens in the real world. Discrimination on the basis of color, caste, creed or religion has been the major issue at all times. The biggest example that stands in the history of Canada is how Aboriginal people were deprived of their human rights and were exploited physically, emotionally and sexually. The exploitation of human rights, within the borders of Canada, is not just limited to the aboriginal community, but also extends to Arabs, Muslims, and many others from countries such as India, China, Japan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Korea.
The fact that these petty actions are punishable and are actually administrated by authorities highlights its corrupt state as well as how racial prejudice exists in every aspect of society. This further supports the idea that the white society has an ethnocentric perspective on the Aboriginals, as they have evaluated them to not be of any importance and not worthy of doing anything that connects them to the whites due to their unique customs, traditions and culture. Hence with the reasons stated, Mudrooroo has successfully used his text, Wild Cat Falling as a medium to portray his
In reporting hostilities between the Indigenous and white settlers, referring to the natives as “pitiless barbarians” clearly shows reporter’s bias towards the settlers. Furthermore, by noting that “[the white settlers] requesting to know [the Aboriginals] motive for the barbarous assault, was answered by a flight of spears,” it depicts the settlers as non violent and civilized in juxtaposition towards the violent savage Aboriginals. Social problems like these are treated in such a way that they leave viewers with the impression that they are caused by something innate within Aboriginal people, rather than by colonial impositions. This systematic misrepresentation indeed influenced the dominant culture in Australia to view Indigenous peoples in a negative light, and was a major cause of the racism and discrimination experienced daily by Aboriginal people across the
In our countries past, many minorities have faced discrimination. Native Americans have faced brutal, deadly discrimination; now they are all but extinct. African Americans have also faced deadly discrimination, merely because of the color of their skin. And Japanese-Americans faced inhumane discrimination due to World War II. Firstly, the Native Americans in this countries history have faced unrelenting discrimination because of their ethnic background.
The unjust prejudice and discrimination of racial groups, such as the indigenous and the Asian, clearly indicates racist views and beliefs held by the Australian society. This exploitation and destruction of the British throughout time greatly supports the statement that the “peopling” of Australia has been dominated by racism. Furthermore, the federal policies set to allow the restriction of non – white immigrants to Australia indicates the maintenance of a single culture, highlighting the racism within the immigration system. The views of racial discrimination established upon arrival to the Australia continued as a recurring theme through the process of populating Australia. Although, the introduction of anti–racism laws in recent years and the current multicultural attitude of today, the presence of racism within society is still clear.
The negative portrayals of earlier films on Aboriginals did not only have a great effect on how the world views them today, but it has also contributed to the continuing struggles of First Nations for individual rights. The world has a variety of interpretations and misinterpretations of the First Nations people, but the one that is stuck to everyone’s mind are probably the portrayals of First Nations in the earlier films. The early film’s portrayals of aboriginals were mostly offensive, inaccurate, and stereotypical-they were not pleasant. In the 1930s, Native people were portrayed as savages. One example is John Ford’s movie Stagecoach which shows a number of Indian type violence, heavy drinkers to being prostitutes to
He also learns that his grandfather was a dominating, immoral and scheming. David and his parents went face to face with dealing with the consequences of Frank’s crime. Racial prejudice means any action practice or belief that reflects the racial world view the ideology that humans are divided into separate groups because of their skin colour. The American Indians are racially prejudiced by most of the people in Montana, they are going through a hard life and living in a desolate reservation; also their lands are probably the least valuable compare to other regions. David eventually learns of the racial discriminations such as not allowing “an athlete like Ronnie” to attend college.
I don’t wish ill will towards anybody that’s Muslim or of Midwestern decent. Instead I actually feel bad for them because they are stereotyped so much because of where they came from and there cultural background. 9/11 was truly devastating and brought America
Internal Conflicts: People living in Canada in the 1900s have been through some tough times and due to that it is controversial if Canada is a nation to be proud of. The government of that time was careless about people’s opinion and made decisions which were considered unfair by citizens of Canada. Due to the government’s carelessness and unfairness Canadians should not be proud of Canada because of how difficult internal conflicts were handled such as the On-to-Ottawa Trek, October Crisis, and the passing of Bill 101. It is believed that the matter about the On-to-Ottawa Trek caused by poor living and working conditions in the unemployed relief camps could have been resolved fairly and responsibly, but it wasn’t handled very
Racism is something that affects all people, something that comes in many different forms. Racism is known to people all over the world. Take our city of Edmonton for example; being a Canadian city we see people of all different races, because Canada is known for being one of the most cultural accepting places in the world. So you would assume that there isn’t racism in such an “accepting place” but that is a very wrong assumption. People would also assume that because places in Africa, like Cape Town, South Africa, over came the apartheid (which separated people based on the color of their skin) would not be socially biased when it comes to skin color but again that would be a wrong assumption.
