Indigenous Issues in a Global Context: Discrimination Introduction: Discrimination is defined as any act of rejecting or excluding an individual or group of any kind. Discrimination and racism are often the roots of extreme tension, genocide, violation of human rights, war crimes, inequity, and oppression of the minority. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights holds true that “all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”. However, all over the world discrimination is used as a powerful tactic to inflict fear or hatred against minority groups; who are often the indigenous peoples of the land, leading to the violation of human rights in oppression, inequity, prejudice, and in too many cases the brutal act of genocide. Even in Canada there are disgraceful issues in the mistreatment and discrimination of First Nations Peoples rooted deep in our nation’s despicable history, concealed and blended into our society and culture so that the countless number of injustices are ignored and left unacknowledged. We are known for fairness, good manners and welcoming smiles, and our flag is the one which Americans wear on their bags when travelling to countries in turmoil; in spite of our nation’s reputation and status we still harbour the discrimination and inequity to minority groups especially towards the Indigenous Peoples. To think that in the country ranked number six in the United Nation’s quality of life index and fifth happiest country in the world, the effects painful effects of colonization are still present through the numerous issues stemmed from discrimination and inequity. One can only imagine the situations in other countries as Indigenous groups are facing these struggles all around the world and in some cases to brutality of femicides, genocide, and even the denial of genocide.
