Summary of “The Indian camp” by Ernest Hemingway Nick, his father, and uncle George are rowing, with two Indians on their way to the Indian camp. Nicks father explain, that there is a very sick women, and he have to help her get better. So they sailed ashore, and arrived to a forest where they see some shanties. Inside one of the shanties on a wooden bunk laid the young Indian women and She has been in labor for two days. Nicks father, who is a doctor, quickly realize that he has to operate. He starts to operate immediately, with a pocketknife and without anesthetics. He performed a Caesarean section, and there was born a boy. Afterwards, Nicks father would like to see the father of the newborn child. But when he pulls back his blanket he sees that the father has cut his own throat with a razor. Nicks father apologizes to Nick for bringing him with. But Nick just starts asking about having babies, people doing suicide and how it is to die. Nick lets his hand trail though the water. In this moment he is pretty sure that he never will die. One of the main themes of the short story, among other things is the father son relationship. Its not a typical history, because the story suddenly takes a sharp turn, when the father to the newborn baby, committed suicide. Nicks father shows his fatherly role and apologize, for the experience that nick have been though. When they are sitting in the rowboat, Nicks father takes his arm around Nick. He does it so Nick feels safe, and then we have the fatherly role aging. Ernest Hemingway, typically write stories where the character's feelings cannot be expressed, and therefore I think it's hard to have justification for the themes.
