How and why intercultural communication is an important matter in contemporary world? The rising of globalization has made intercultural communication inevitable. Everyone in this universe is interconnected with one another. Communicating with other cultures is no longer an obscure thing. Diverse information constantly radiates this universe. The need of intercultural communication is also constantly rising in this contemporary world. The main purpose of intercultural communication is to increase understanding of culturally mediated communication phenomena. Hence, the knowledge of communicating with other cultures should be a prime skill that is thoroughly emphasized. Some of the detailed reasons of the importance of intercultural communication will be discussed in this article. Firstly, by studying and understanding intercultural communication, people will be more self-aware. Intercultural communication’s understanding will be reflected in the increment of awareness of individuals’ own culture. Individuals will then know about their cultural identity and background. This will then avoid ethnocentrism. Ethnocentrism is the tendency to judge another culture relative to own culture. Ethnocentric individuals think that their own culture is superior to that of other cultures. This is especially important in contemporary world as more and more cultures are spreading and penetrating to various countries via globalization. By raising self-awareness, individuals will tend to respect and value another culture, which will give birth to a harmony situation. Another reason to have a great understanding of intercultural communication is due to demographic changes. In this contemporary era, people are able to move from one place to another at ease.
