What would society be without role models and heroes? In this essay I will talk about how heroes positively and negatively affect our society, what qualifies as a hero, and who my biggest hero is. One of the biggest negative affects of heroes in society is that it promotes the thought of a perfect human being, specifically in one certain thing. My guess of the worst idea of a hero is when people look up to too skinny models or people because of the fact that they are skinny. The idea of a role model asks people to conform and try to change who they are. While that may be for the better, it could just as well be for the worst. Even though there are negative affects, I think there are many more positive affects to having a role model. One of them being, it gives people something to strive for to become. Having heroes enables people to respect good images of people in their society. It also sheds light on the fact that things are possible to a certain group that has many boundaries in front of that goal. One of the biggest qualities I think makes a hero worthwhile is happiness with everything, to see someone who has endured very much and is still optimistic is enlightening. Many other qualities people find in a hero are; bravery, consistency, determination, success, and intelligent with a lack of ignorance. My biggest hero is my mom. As it sounds cliché, it’s true. She may not be the best person, and I’m sure she has made mistakes she regrets, but she has taught me to live in the moment and take charge of my life. She always says it’s better to be a leader than a follower, and I think she has set up a well-rounded image in my head of who I want to be.
