Understanding why communication is important in adult social care setting. UNDERSTANDING THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNICATION 1.1 Communication is important as it is the foundation for understanding the needs and wishes of others. The first point of communication is usually to greet and introduce ourselves and that is the beginning of the communication process. In order to fully understand the desires and requests of others and to have our own communication understood we must communicate effectively and actively using all tools appropriate to the individual needs of others. Good communication is the key to a successful healthy relationship enabling us to carry out our work and social skills accurately and professionally. To satisfy the needs of others we must acknowledge the imp [ordnance of all types of communication and actively seek to assist with this at all times. 1.2 Effective communication affects all aspects of Working in Adult Social Care Settings. It is the basis for preparing us to work with others successfully in all work settings but is particularly important in adult social work areas. If you cannot communicate with someone you will be unable to meet their desires/wishes and needs properly and ultimately will not have a productive respectful relationship with them. We should always endeavor to use the ‘ENCODING – DECODING’ method which is a process which promotes use to actively listen digest and respond accurately to information and then to respond in the same manner. We need to hear when we listen as this is what enables us to interoperate and translate information accurately and respond effectively. 1.3 Observing the reactions of others is very important during communication as you can pick up things from body language as a good indication of someone’s understand of what has been said.
