Importance of Functional Business Areas Management 521 March 4, 2013 All businesses no matter their sizes or complexities have a given number of important tasks, processes or functions that must be executed regularly as part of the company purpose. Functional areas within a business can be described as individual or individuals that have the responsibility to carry out a specific set of activities and tasks to support the established company objectives and goals. The amount and diversity of functional areas within organizations will vary depending on different factors like size, number of employees, business type, geographic location, organizational structure, market, applicable laws, and political conditions, among others. There is a general set of competencies and skills that managers must have to be effective in any business, regardless of the functional area in which they directly work on. Technical, human and conceptual skills will support the daily functions of most managers. However, some specific skills and competencies are more important and useful than others for some particular business functional areas. Organizations must assure that their management staff have all the required skills for the tasks and functions they are performing. Paolillo (1987) believed that production managers, for example, should be developed in more technical and associated decisional roles while sales manager’s development should have more emphasis in human skills and interpersonal roles. Two functional areas that interest me are human resources management and operations management. Human resources team mainly deals with the development of the company personnel. The human resources functional area will guide and support all stages of employee’s life cycle activities within the company since hiring until termination. Activities like employees training,
