If I Could Change One Important Thing About My Country (Indonesia)

It could be said that Indonesia and I have some kind of love-hate relationship. I was born and raised in Indonesia so that is where my loyalty was from. And the potential of the country itself makes me proud. But one cannot deny ugly things that will be seen with eyes open. The most ironic thing is that the ‘ugliness’ was mainly caused by the people themselves. One significant example is the tight relationship between poverty and –again– corruption. Indonesia even has the potential to lead the world, but what is pulling it down is the mindset of corruption and lack of ethics. So if i could change one important thing about my country, i would change the people’s mindset. To put it bluntly, There are many faults in the mindsets of the people of Indonesia. Our love for money is overwhelming. we expect money for everything, and inevitably, it results in corruptions and crimes. Moreover, we are self centered people who just keep complaining about others whenever we get the chance to. We lament on the government and can talk for hours about why Indonesia is still developing but are too ignorant of what is around us and what we can do to help others. Actually, the most important question is; what have we done for Indonesia until now? Irrespective of whether it is in politics, business or the country in general, the 'quality mindset' of the people is clearly missing. By quality mindset, I mean an appreciation of very basic values such as honesty and integrity. Those two words seems simple enough but has an huge effect on the person who understand the true meaning. This is what i want people of Indonesia change their mindset into. This is not about converting an individual. This only requires creating a quality mindset since the quality begins in ourselves. People with a quality mindset recognize “If you do not improve, you deteriorate” and demand sustained, continuous
