Identify a famous speech from history or from a contemporary political leader and analyze the ethos, logos, and pathos within the speech. Pathos: Martin Luther King establishes Pathos in many different ways. First, he talks about all of the injustices of our country. The “insufficient fund” checks and the going back on promises set by our forefathers. He sympathizes with all of those who had been discriminated against because they were black, and says one day there shall never be “white only” signs hanging in motels and hotels. But he is also very clever to establish his pathos. He appeals to whites as well as blacks. He doesn’t simply preach to Black people who easily will join his fight and be on his side. He also appeals to the white population. He states how the white people at his speech are the first to start the foundation that lets Blacks progress with whites and gain liberties that had previously only been available for whites. And the last sort of Pathos he gives off is hope. Every single time he says “I have a dream” chills come up throughout my whole body. The meaning of these words strikes a cord in just about every American. He is saying that he has hope, that one day the whole nation will rid itself of the segregation and discrimination that it has been so immersed in for centuries. He is saying that while we still haven’t quite reached it, he believes one day it will become real and that hope springs eternal for equality. Logos: Martin Luther King incorporates a lot of logos into his speech as well. He talks about the police brutalities that occurred over the years at many of his different non-violent marches and demonstrations. He talks about the signs that are hung that are completely and utterly in the wrong with what the emancipation proclamation stated when it was written.
