This is a time in our country to be thinking about nursing, policy and politics. Burkhardt & Nathaniel (2008) describe the importance of nurses becoming actively involved with policy making and politics. It is imperative that individual nurses as well as nursing organizations take positions on political issues. As a member of the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) there are many opportunities to become involved politically. The IAFN is an international membership organization comprised of forensic nurses working around the world and other professionals who support and compliment the work of forensic nursing. The mission of the IAFN is to provide leadership in forensic nursing practice by developing, promoting, and disseminating information internationally about forensic nursing science. Disseminate the SAFE Protocol of 2004 2. Establish a toll-free, nationwide help-line to assist callers 3. Develop and maintain an interactive SAFE Protocol of 2004 technical assistance website 4. Provide limited on-site technical assistance to communities struggling to establish and/or maintain effective Sexual Assault Response Teams (SART) initiatives 5. Provide a national training and education plan There are many strong nurses involved in the IAFN who unify their voices to lobby for political change and governmental funding changes. With input, the presidents DNA initiative was implemented. The IAFN is working hard to have the changes applied and educate the community at large. As an advocate for policy change, personally and through the IAFN I have been involved in many grassroots lobbying efforts. Many letters have been written as well as personal visits to policy making officials. Violence is an epidemic in our society and nurses need to be cognizant of this issue.
