“I’m Getting Old Now” is a prose poem written by the contemporary Canadian poet Robert Kroetsch. The poem, which is written in a conversational tone, deals with his perspective on death, and there is a realization of the inevitability and so an acceptance of death, which is regarded not with dread but with the calm acceptance. The poem is an anecdote leading to an analysis of the passage of time, age and his perspective on death based on a memory of his mother, although there is no tone of nostalgia in the poem. The poem begins with the statement: “I'm Getting Old Now” bringing out the poet’s awareness of his advancing age. As one grows old and nears the end, one thinks a great deal about the past, especially the happy times; similarly, the poet thinks a lot about his childhood. The poet realizes that he is getting old because he dreams a lot about his mother who died when he was thirteen years old. The sudden death of his mother made him doubt reality and became a central experience of loss for the poet. It is said that older people tend to think more about the distant past than the recent past, and this is probably why the narrator concludes that he is getting old.
